Yep, it's too bad we'll also have to figure out how to replace one of (if not the) best WRs in the game on $1M too. I was hoping that we'd be able to use all the money freed up by Bell to improve the D.

I heard the same thing. It indicates to me that the Steelers will not be making a splash signing in the first wave of FAs unless it is a player who is cut by his team. They are poised to lose several free agents, but nobody with a big name. Biggest potential contracts are maybe in the $3M range. If the Steelers expected to be players in the FA talent pool then they would have known not to expect 2020 compensation for Bell. If no compensation coming back then there is no risk in tossing the tag on Bell. Maybe you somehow get a team to sign him and offer you a fifth or something not to match, who knows?

If the Steelers don't transition tag him then don't count on guys like Ha-Ha coming to the Steel City. Not that they ever are big first day players, but for those who thought things might work out differently this year due to the extra cap space...it won't.

It's interesting that we can see the same data point and get totally different answers.

I see this and think "They're not going to tie up the cap space from the tag at the beginning of the UFA period. That probably means they're making room to sign a big name UFA".

I think you see this and think "They're going to let him walk as a UFA so they can get a comp pick next year. That probably means they're not going to sign a big name UFA that would cost them that pick."

I think either interpretation is reasonable, but I hope I'm right...despite the fact that we almost never sign big name UFAs. But we also almost always spend to the cap and I don't think we really have big contracts of our own to take care of this year.

Fair enough, both points can be argued. The reason I don't think that they are freeing up cap space is because there are other avenues to do so. However, one of my ways was by either extending or releasing Dupree.

I would also prefer to not pay Bud $9M+ on his extension.

Gurley has arthritis in the knee; And he kept this hidden until he got his deal. Guess how the Rams feel now? Guess what owners in the league now think about in giving a RB a super big deal? Guess what these owners are thinking now in regards to Bell and all the mileage he has on his tires?

Logically, Bell shouldn't get that kind of money. But I won't be surprised if he does. There's just too many stupid teams willing to dump stupid money on a big name free agent. It happens time and time again.

Funny theory when this place just predicted AB was driving down his value and wouldn’t get what he wanted.

                                Only takes one team.
