I always go back to this for the RB argument.
quick, name a RB on any of the patriots SB teams.
I'm not saying a HOF RB isn't a vital piece of the offense. But I believe it's a position that is often over-valued.2014 MNF EXEC CHAMPION!!!Comment

It's always a smart move to sign quality players that produced and contribute to team success. Again, it depends on the structure of the contract.
Players that produce and contribute to team success deserve to be compensated. Teams that want quality players need to pay those players. That's the bottom line.
You need to allocate the limited resources of the cap in the wisest way to win a championship period. Fairness has nothing to do with that.
Allocating those funds to what the market pays to elite running backs is poor strategy in today's NFL.
I've said FOR YEARS save on elite back and overspend on secondary.sigpic

Here is a list of runningbacks that have played under elite contracts since I've been saying this on this forum:
Devonta Freeman
Todd Gurley
David Johnson
LeVeon Bell
Zeke
Really which one looks like a good move?sigpic

I've said dont pay elite money to backs,et them walk, invest that money in secondary.
I know circumstances forced their hand but I would suggest the current SB champion did just that.sigpic

You win in cap leagues by paying guys less than market value.
This is most important with QB because their salaries are highest.
But, it doesn't make sense to do with RBs because the difference between the cheap substitute option usually isn't enormous (much different than QB).
I think the time to overspend on an elite RB would be when you have a good QB on a rookie deal. I'd probably want to put most of the cap savings from not paying market value on the QB into D. But having an elite RB is probably really good for a young QB.
It's not something that I think a team with a market value QB (like us) should spend our remaining cap dollars on. There are just too many other more valuable things to do with that cap space..Comment

There are so few elite QBs and teams generally don't seem to be good at scouting for them.
So when you have one that's at least OK on a rookie deal, you almost have to make them among the highest paid players in the league when their contract comes up. Because you know how long Buffalo and Cleveland have been looking for someone who's better than terrible.
I think KC will be good for a long time because they created a great cap structure for their elite QB. And they probably wouldn't have been able to do it without a pandemic.
Just like I don't think Brady would have done it if he was a super high pedigree guy.Comment

But he got guaranteed money. He can spend the rest of his life rapping in luxury.
If that sounds snarky against LB - that’s not my intent. He bet on himself and took care of his future. My snark is for the jets organization. They continue to be pathetic.2014 MNF EXEC CHAMPION!!!Comment
