I don't think this discussion is exclusively focused on that one game. In general what should the NFL do about OT games is the discussion. Of course, you should be able to prevent 45 yards being gained in 13 seconds, but since it did happen how to equitably determine the outcome of the game is the question.

The only thing I heard that makes sense is if you score on the last possession to tie the game the other team should automatically get possession first.

I don’t mimd the current rules of TD ending a game vs FG extending it on the first possession.

but I really don’t think its all that unfair to never have a chance to respond if they score a TD.

I hate it because it determines the outcome of a game that is unlike the first 60 minutes of the game. I would rather see no overtime in the regular season and play real football in overtime until someone wins a 15 minute quarter.

But it's no longer regulation. In hockey they don't play an entire extra period, it's next goal wins which is how it should be imo and how the NFL had it before the rule change. This would make the NFL like soccer and who wants that lol.

I think what's happened is because the NFL has become so offensive focused it's skewed people's views on OT where as in the past it was a more balanced game (and better imo). So in that sense maybe it would make sense to extend it somehow but oooof.

I think there were like 4 ties this year and we made the playoffs because the Raiders scored a FG on the last play of OT.

Like someone else said.. its done the same way in hockey in OT. First goal wins.

Ya but they also dont flip a coin to see who gets the puck first. Thats the big issue with sudden death. In my opinion if you want sudden death eliminate field goals in overtime, first td wins.

The coin flip is luck and sucks but the answer is to play defense. Simple as that.

The only other option I can think of is continue the OT period the same as moving from the 1st quarter to the 2nd quarter (or 3rd quarte to the 4th quarter). The tam with the ball keeps it. Probably a little better than a coin flip.
Help me find my post proving I am a Yinzer!

I will tip my hat to Tomlin if he has a winning record and the team makes the play-offs in the upcoming season.

I like this idea if you're going to go golden points, just keep playing, whoever has the ball keeps the ball or whoever scored to tie has to kickoff and play the game with regular rules until someone wins, no extra timeouts, just keep playing. This at least gives each team some strategy to play, kick into the end zone, keep it in play, onside kick and the receiving team.

Playing defense is great if the score is 13-13.
Much different than a game going into OT where the score is in the 30s and 40s.
How is it possible to have the best owner, best front office, best gm, best HC, good/great drafts every year and good FA acquisitions every year, but only have 3 playoff wins in 14 years?

I know.. but you still have to play defense or the game is over. I’ve seen teams take the drop and score on the first trip into the other teams zone.

All you have to do is stop a team from scoring a TD. Should be easy enough IMO.

Like...how hard is it to get to this point? At least it's not whatever the NFL equivalent of the shoot out would be. Absolutely ridiculous way to end a game. Maybe every team picks a guy to juggle pins and the first person to drop one loses.

                            Just keep playing the game.

IF there was a change, I would say (1) get rid of the coin toss, (2) continue the game as if there was no end to the 4th Q and (3) you have to win by 4 or more (maybe?).

So, if you get the ball first you can still kick a FG to go up by 3. But if the other team scores a TD, they win. If they don't score a TD, you can win on the next drive with a FG.

I'm not married to the "win by 4" idea, but just continuing the game is probably better than a coin toss.

I bet the PA would be against the win by 4 because it prolongs games. But maybe just don't have OT in the regular season and only do OT in the playoffs.

a few years ago the Chiefs lost the AFC championship game to N.E. in OT , N.E. won the toss and Mahomes never touched the ball as Brady took them down for a TD and game over ... this wasnt a topic then so why should it be now ???

I wouldn't be surprised to find that people wrote about it then too.

I don't think people will remember that this is being talked about now in a couple of years (unless they actually change the rules).
