    Playoff OT rules

Big topic today after the Bills/Chiefs, but most people I hear complain aren't thinking it through. They just say both teams should have a shot with the ball.

OK, then what? Chiefs score, Bills score. Do the Chiefs just need a FG now? Coin toss winner still in great shape if that's the case.

So do you give each team the same amount of possessions? That's like college except you start at your own end of the field.

I would be for just playing another full quarter. If that ends in a tie, go to sudden death like they used to.

Or play defense for 13 seconds.
Help me find my post proving I am a Yinzer!

I will tip my hat to Tomlin if he has a winning record and the team makes the play-offs in the upcoming season.

You’re right. People don’t think it through. At some point, it becomes sudden death.

If you can’t stop someone from scoring with 13 seconds, you deserve to lose.

unless they change it to be more like baseball innings. Each team gets to play offense. Whoever has more points after each “inning” wins. But the game could drag on too long and get players injured.

I don't need special OT rules for the playoffs. I think it should kept simple. If the score is tied after 4 - we play a 5th quarter. Make it 10 minutes if you want. give it another 2 minute warning and perhaps a timeout per side. play if out and see the score. If it's still tied, welcome to another 10 minutes in the 6th quarter.

Lol why though? It's already overtime! Why play an additional quarter of football that makes no sense. And if teams don't want to risk it in OT then go for the win in regulation or stop the other team from scoring with 13 seconds left.

I can't believe the media is making a story out of this and I'm tired of how knee-jerk the NFL is becoming, almost everything they change is for the worse. Just go back to sudden death OT and while we're at it go back to a 16 game season, 6 playoff teams, etc.

In all fairness, this is just the latest incident to revive the ongoing revolt against the current overtime rules. They tried to get it right a few years ago but it still sucks. I think it's a fair statement that both teams deserve an opportunity to possess the ball in OT. If you adopt something like the college overtime rules, then both teams are guaranteed at least one possession and it becomes increasingly difficult to end in a tie after each OT period.

That's basically where I'm at. Bills need some pass rushing help, which was evident last night.

I’m for sudden death flat out. You have 4 quarters to sort it out.

                    They’ll eventually change the rules.

either give both teams a chance with the ball
or just play a full 10 min QR. still tied after that then it’s sudden death

There should be no overtime in regular season…. Period

Both teams should get the ball in playoff overtime. A coin flip shouldn’t determine it.
How is it possible to have the best owner, best front office, best gm, best HC, good/great drafts every year and good FA acquisitions every year, but only have 3 playoff wins in 14 years?

In a vacuum, sure that's the issue with the Bills in their game. The bigger thing (I don't necessarily know that it's an issue) that people are talking about is that 90% of playoff OT games are won by the team winning the coin toss with 70% of those wins coming on a first drive TD.

Sure, don't go to OT, yada yada yada... Truth is it's not a level playing field when you get there. That is the larger discussion.

In any case, the Chiefs proposed an OT rule change and the teams voted against it, so they're kind of laying in the bed they made.
