Let me get this straight. Being like the coaches above defines greatness?

You are correct he is indeed different from the entire list of "great" coaches you provided.

He is "different" in ways that are much more foundational than 5 seconds blowing a kiss to a camera after 14 winning seasons.

I thought a coach is defined by wins and loses PERIOD.

If being "like" the coaches above defines "greatness" in your eyes, I guess Tomlin has no chance of making you happy.

In view of the fact that Mike Tomlin has matched Cowhers record I give him the designation:

      TCFCLTC-
The Coach Formerly Considered Less Than Cowher

I'm always dubious of ranking teams or individuals using a formula but that's still kind of crazy that Tomlin is ranked dead last in two different rankings and 21st in the third ranking. Pete Carroll is 30th and I can say he's done a terrible job coaching this season, he should probably retire at this point. Whoever the HC of the Giants is ranked 31st lol.

It's hard if not impossible (probably not fair either) to compare players and coaches to players and coaches of different ERAs.
Help me find my post proving I am a Yinzer!

I will tip my hat to Tomlin if he has a winning record and the team makes the play-offs in the upcoming season.

Has he had 14 winning seasons or 14 non-losing seasons? Not the same thing. And, as far as making me happy, how about some post-season wins? When is the last time he has had a few of those? 20 teams have had a playoff win since Tomlin...20? Could that be correct? How can a "great" coach have a playoff win dearth for that long?

This is a very odd post. Many of us are starting to wonder if maybe YOU have actually mugged for the camera. Are you denying it? Denying that you have, in fact, been guilty of what you allege that Tomlin did?

I do maintain: The last time I was head coach of an NFL team, I did not mug the camera during or immediately after a game. There, I am on record.

I think it's worth noting that Carroll was the poster boy for an example of making your team better by replacing the coach not long ago.

And many on the board said: "wait until they are paying market rate for a QB and we'll see how they perform".

I think the results have been predictable.

It looks like it wasn't the coaching as much as it was having players on undermarked contracts (especially the QB).

It's very hard to be consistently competitive in the NFL...even when you have a HOF QB.

That's why it's super rare for QBs to have more SB wins or appearances than Ben has.

And why "we should have done so much better when we had Ben" arguments kind of fall flat.

Maybe if Ben consistently played on a contract that was ("market value" - "value of elite CB") we would have been able to have more success. But it's unreasonable to expect anyone to play that far below their market value. Brady is a special case on many levels.

I'd go with impossible when the eras include massive changes to the league like implementation of (i) Unrestricted Free Agency and (ii) a Salary Cap.

Don’t care what anyone says, for every Steelers WR to get unsportsmanlike , taunting penalties or exhibit behavior seen in the last decade. It’s coached in Pittsburgh and Coach Tomlin condones it. Tell me I’m lying
