Film Room: Can Dwayne Haskins Become More Than Just A Backup?

Back in January, the Pittsburgh Steelers signed QB Dwayne Haskins to a one-year futures contract after being released by the Washington Football Team earlier in the season. The deal for Haskins was for the league minimum and has been deemed as a reclamation project of sorts by members of the media after being ousted by […]

Good contrast to some of the film showing his poor playing. To be a successful QB in the NFL he needs to be a whole lot more consistent. That's one thing the WFT coaches complained about was inconsistency. A handful of good plays followed by WTFs ruining what he put together.

That's the point I've been making. He was given the keys to the car and he put scratches and dents in it. His game tapes doesn't scream a guy who can become an elite QB which is what you need to win in this league. I hope Canada is maybe a miracle worker and proves me wrong.

It's hard to be consistent when you don't know the playbook and you run a crap offensive scheme. I know I'm riding the small chance gamble here. But, I think Haskins will be a star in this league. I truly believe he beats out Rudolph next season.

If you have watched all his game tape in college you'll realize he has all the tools to be great. His lack of success in the NFL was clearly based on effort to learn. As long as he desires to be great he will be. He is physically gifted on a different level. He isn't a one read and pass guy. He is a 3-4 read deep guy with a laser deep ball. The guy has surgical accuracy when he knows where a player is supposed to be. His lack of success was all the system and his lack of accountability in learning the PB.

its weird when people use WFT’s assessment of Haskin’s. Their whole FO has been a mess until Rivera arrived.

I think Rivera cut Haskin’s to show the players and the owner he is in charge and won’t be undermined by Snyder.

Who knows if Haskin’s pans out but people act like he has been in the league and failed for 7 years. Kid has barely played and has a lot or game left.

People are quick to write people off. Immature kid in a bad system with a bad organization=failure. Haskins in a good system, with much accountability, and a terrific organization=success.

Funny - i've been REALLY curious about your take on Haskins - you typically have a fairly unbiased take on OSU players

                    I've got my fingers crossed.

Turning a cast off into a franchise QB would be awesome.

Haskins has the tools. The question mark appears to be the mental side of the game.

                        Not really. It's stuff like this that got Haskins cut;

Haskins missed the final snap of his first NFL win in 2019 because he was on the sideline taking selfies with fans, unaware that Washington had the ball back and he needed to go kneel down.

There's been a plethora of failed QBs who had "all the tools" but failed miserably in the NFL - too many to count.

Your last sentence says it all. He can have all the otherworldly tools there are, but if he doesn't have it between the ears it is meaningless...and I don't just mean intelligence. The history of the NFL is littered with the names of great physical talents who failed in the NFL.

I don't know the exact specifics of this, but the QB should probably know things like down, distance, time remaining, and whether or not the game is over. This sounds like something from a Halmark highschool football movie (which I agree is kind of funny).

I agree that this shouldn't be a huge deal by itself (although I think it's probably worse than Juju dancing which became a thing ).

But with Haskins it does fit the narrative of a guy that hasn't been that dedicated.

Hopefully being laid low and then moving from one of the worst run teams in the league to one of the best helps him find his focus.
