He didn’t impact the DB at all. We will probably get a letter this week with a stupid apology.Comment

The problem with replay on calls like this is that some officials seem reluctant to OVERTURN the call on the field.
Everyone with a working eyeball could see that this was NOT pass interference. But for whatever reason, replay officials are reluctant to overturn calls on the field unless it's absurdly, blatantly obvious.
Ridiculous. The objective is to get the call correct.Last edited by Eich; 10-01-2019, 09:40 AM.Comment

I agree that the PI call was bad. They never should have thrown the yellow flag. But on a challenge to overturn a PI call, they're going to go with the call on the field unless the video replay gives them incontrovertible evidence. I knew they wouldn't overturn that call, because Holton had his hand on the DB.
And the possible reward for winning that challenge was not enough to justify risking the price you pay if you lose it.
Look, it was just a small mistake in an overall brilliant performance by the coaching staff. I would like to see Tomlin get more help on challenges -- thought that was what part of what Teryl Austin was supposed to be doing.Last edited by Buzz; 10-01-2019, 08:55 AM.Comment

It's pretty tin foil hat-ish, but Locked On Steelers pointed out today that Tomlin's streak of losing challenges coincides with Riveron taking the job.
Apparently one of the guys on the podcast analyzed all Tomlin's challenges over the summer (on DK Pittsburgh sports?). Said that he thought many should have been overturned based on the rules (like this PI call).
Either way, it's stupid that the league now allows flags to be challenged. Bogs down the game and doesn't make anyone feel like the game is being better officiated.Comment

What's the purpose of the rule then? Even the referee brought into the booth said there is no pass interference on that play. He was stunned that it wasn't overturned. I know Tomlin doesn't have a good track record with challenges but this one was spot on, IMO, and he got bad ruling. The challenge of a subjective call only leads to another subjective call and there is no way to get it right. Look at the difference of opinion just on this board. The rule should be eliminated and let the referees on the filed make the calls and be done with it.

It was the wrong call. I don’t think you will find anyone outside of Tomlin challenge challengers who didn’t think the refs screwed us in that call.
It’s bogus to suggest a hand on a player is obvious proof a call won’t be overturned...
It’s obvious NOW that the refs aren’t going to overturn PI’s unless it’s some Saints/Rams type call... and I’m not even sure they will overturn that call either.Comment

I heard the official they brought in agree that it shouldn't have been called pass interference. Maybe I missed it, I didn't hear him say he was "stunned that it wasn't overturned." What I thought I heard him say is that on PI challenges, they're going to go with the call on the field unless there's incontrovertible evidence otherwise. What's the purpose of the rule then?
