Draft and rookies are nothing but a gamble.
See Artie and Bud. Then Watt.
The problem with the Bud and Artie picks were that they were known gambles at the time - gambles that didn't pay off. In both cases the overriding appeal was athleticism. Burns had a similar profile to both Cortez Allen and Ike, but played at a big school. Dupree played at an also-ran school in the SEC and put up decent numbers but had a reputation for only surviving on his raw abilities, but not having football smarts.

I'd say that it is time to concentrate on proven production in college but that is how the Jarvis Jones era began.

Tomlin/Butler make adjustments. Sometimes they have the slow linebackers cover a RB they can't cover. Sometimes they have the slow linebackers cover a TE they can't cover and sometimes they have the slow linebackers cover a WR they can't cover....

imo the Burns pick had as much to do with panic as anything. I'm a firm believer that our guy was William Jackson III

            This.

I think when you're at the top of the 1st, you can usually find guys with athleticism and production. But at the bottom of the 1st, you end up having to roll the dice on one or the other.

Turns out drafting players is hard. Especially when you're consistently toward the end of the first.

Everyone in this poster room knows what head coaches have been responsible for for decades. And then you guys come up with some brand new crap of what Tomlin isn’t responsible for. It’s not working.

The bottom line is Tomlin put up all those regular season stats ( and the majority of those were with Cowher coaches and players) but since 2010 ( with most of Cowhers coaches and players gone ) he’s won 3 playoff games. Boom. Bottom line. You can’t get around it or explain that away. Checkmate.

What are you talking about? I didnt say jack squat about Ben in this thread.

I am STILL confused over your response to my post supporting Harrisons being mad at Tomlin.

In view of the fact that Mike Tomlin has matched Cowhers record I give him the designation:

              TCFCLTC-
The Coach Formerly Considered Less Than Cowher

I think he meant me in the post you quoted here.

Not sure about the other part though.

It's the double-edged sword of being a consistently good team. You get to look forward to playoffs (almost) every year, but you never have the opportunity to draft a Roquan Smith without selling out the rest of your draft.

And it was the thing that Cowher suffered from for most of his career.

Then we have one really bad season, get pick 11, and the rest is history.
