Kordell is considered a “running QB”...he has a grand total of 204 more career rushing yards than Aaron Rodgers...

I was pretty young but Kordell would have been really special if he stayed at WR and played a versatile roleWhile at it -- another pet peeve. I never understood the hate for Kordell either. He was our starting QB for 6 years. We went to the playoffs three times, and to the AFC championship game twice. In '97 we were one ill-advised EZ pick from going to the SB (which we would likely have won, had we made it). In '01 the loss was not on Kordell. It was the peak of the Patriots double-star act; and yet we were one Troy Edwards mistake from closing out -- the nut stepped out of bounds on a punt, and the repeat punt return went for a TD.
In 96 and 97 he was stellar. For parts of 01 he was superman.
So, while I concede that he was a disappointment, given his talent, why the hate?Comment

Also, rather than separate "passing" and "running" QBs i just dont get the downside of a duel threat who is good at both lol. I dont like my QBs one dimensional the same way i dont like corners that cant tackle or DEs that cant defend the run.Comment

Kordell played poorly in the AFCC, but he was stellar all year around. There were peans being sung to him in all the sports rags. Ben has had similarly horrible games. Consider his rating in the 05 SB.You know why Bostonsteeler.
I never understood it as well. Folks acted like Kordell was a bum who never made the playoffs.
Then you had the gay rumors on top of that. This town really has a weird love/hate relationship with our QB's. We love to hate them. lol
edit: I just looked up Kordell's stats.. ok, I can see why. LMAO. His stats on paper were terrible, especially in the playoffs. 1TD and 4 INT's. We still came close to a SB but for some reason we decided to pass at the GL after our running game got us down their vs Denver. I still think if it wasn't the end of the quarter before that pass play we would have ran the ball. We got cute.
The problem was that Kordell regressed subsequently, particularly after the thanksgiving day debacle, but then he came back strong towards the end of 00.Comment

Cam never pans out? I can't take you seriously when you make uninformed statements like this.Steve Young is a great example of a running QB turned "successful." But these are few and far between. Look at Cam Newton OTOH, for an example of one who never pans out. (Yes, he's gotten to the SB.)
Rich Gannon is another example, but in both cases, these guys tended to flounder for years, until they "found the light" so to speak. To me, this says that you prefer to pick up one of these guys as they age and mature, and their athleticism dwindles.Steelers 27

it's amazing to hear folks blatantly lie about Cam but these folks have an agenda.Dude was also league MVP during that Super Bowl season, leading his team to a 15-1 record (dude threw for 3837 yards with 35 TD and 10 INT that year, plus another 636 yards on the ground with 10 more TDs). On what freaking planet is that a guy who never pans out? Wow...
here in Charlotte fans were mad after the playoff loss and some of my coworkers blamed Cam. Once it was pointed out how WR’s dropped TD passes and the D couldn’t stop Brees it was “um, uh, err... but his attitude”Last edited by feltdizz; 01-11-2018, 01:35 PM.Steelers 27

I thought Cam played a fantastic game vs. the Saints. Needed a little more help from his teammates.it's amazing to hear folks blatantly lie about Cam but these folks have an agenda.

Agreed. I'd go so far as to say he would have become a fan favorite (ala JuJu), if they'd have kept him as a WR/Slash player.
Instead, Cowher & Co. tried to make him into more of a traditional, pocket-passing QB, where he had some success in spite of the fact that it didn't really play to his strengths -- a testament to Kordell's considerable athletic ability.Comment

I might consider going through that exercise but people will just argue the game has changed over time. Defenses and offenses are so different. You guys are all likely working with biased samples.
Consider this:
a) How many "passing" QBs were drafted in the past 40 years? What fraction of them panned out?
b) How many "running" QBs were drafted in the same time? What fraction of them panned out?
I don't have the stats at my disposal, but I'm willing to take a bet that the success rate for both is roughly the same to within statistical significance -- if anything I expect its higher for QBs who can run.
It doesn't make sense to focus on the high-profile ones only. For every Jamarcus Russell out there, there are several Eric Crouchs..Comment

What I realized is a lot of people don’t actually watch his games. They see a sack or hear Colin Cowherd dog Ca our and they run with it. The. You have those who never have him a chance just cause he beat their SEC team and smashed most of Tebow’s single season records.
I still remember the radio heads in Charlotte who didn’t want him and swore Andrew Luck would be the next Montana. A few of them had the stones to admit they were wrong which was noble but others are still sticking to their guns.Steelers 27

For what it's worth, Walterfootball's most recent mock draft has us taking Louisville QB Lamar Jackson in round 1, but then followed that up with USC LB Cameron Smith in round 2 and Pitt safety Jordan Whitehead in round 3.
Steeler teams featuring stat-driven, me-first, fantasy-football-darling diva types such as Antonio Brown & Le'Veon Bell won no championships.
Super Bowl winning Steeler teams were built around a dynamic, in-your-face defense plus blue-collar, hard-hitting, no-nonsense football players on offense such as Hines Ward & Jerome Bettis.
We don't want Juju & Conner to replace what we lost in Brown & Bell.
We are counting on Juju & Conner to return us to the glory we once had with Hines & The Bus.Comment

I was convinced I was the only person living in NC that kinda likes Cam. Everyone I know around here hates him. What I realized is a lot of people don’t actually watch his games. I do think he's a work in progress and if they surround him with talent and the right coaching the sky's the limit. He's probably the most physically gifted athlete at QB I've ever seen and I think that hurts him a little. He is such a natural talent, he probably never had to work to succeed in football and now it shows a little in his mechanics and footwork.
I honestly have no idea how hard Cam works and this is just conjecture. But I would bet it's true just like it's probably true that the little guys like AB and Drew Brees had to work 10x harder than anyone else to overcome their size to be successful.sigpicComment

I could live with that...Jackson would need some time to develop and I doubt now that Ben will retire...For what it's worth, Walterfootball's most recent mock draft has us taking Louisville QB Lamar Jackson in round 1, but then followed that up with USC LB Cameron Smith in round 2 and Pitt safety Jordan Whitehead in round 3.
