I don't have that kind of money.

Good thing it's not our bill to pay. .

I say they should cross that bridge when they get there.

In view of the fact that Mike Tomlin has matched Cowhers record I give him the designation:

    TCFCLTC-
The Coach Formerly Considered Less Than Cowher

I'm glad the Steelers don't think like you then. Future planning is essential when looking at contracts.

Shazier reminds me of Sean Lee. Always balling but always hurt. I still pay him because as we see, he is a game changer. He won our playoff game last year. If he misses 3 or 4 games a year I'm fine with it.

Because of reliability questions (albeit for different reasons), treat Shazier's next contract like Le'Veon Bell's next contract. You can't give these guys a huge signing bonus that would result in a Woodley-like dead money hit if injuries continue to linger (or if drug issues pop up again). However, you can give them a base salary commensurate with their talent, so that they are paid well if they are able to play. Someone like Antonio Brown can be given a contract with a big signing bonus on his next extension because he is talented, productive, and reliable.

Essentially, if the team determines that you are a talented player, you get a second contract. If you are a talented and productive player, you get a top notch base salary in that next contract. If you are a talented, productive, and reliable player, you a get a big old signing bonus with plenty of guaranteed money on that top notch contract. Shazier (health) and Bell (drugs/health) have satisfied the first two criteria, while Brown has satisfied all of them.
Steeler teams featuring stat-driven, me-first, fantasy-football-darling diva types such as Antonio Brown & Le'Veon Bell won no championships.

Super Bowl winning Steeler teams were built around a dynamic, in-your-face defense plus blue-collar, hard-hitting, no-nonsense football players on offense such as Hines Ward & Jerome Bettis.

We don't want Juju & Conner to replace what we lost in Brown & Bell.

We are counting on Juju & Conner to return us to the glory we once had with Hines & The Bus.

"Future planning" is one thing Shawn.
There is no evidence that they prematurely decide not to sign someone this far out thus any assumption otherwise is pure speculation.

It seems reasonable to put more weight on what happens going forward than what has happened thus far.

Depending on how much they end up paying Brown they may not be able to afford anyone else

This coming offseason, focus on the offense...extend Brown to a long term deal and franchise tag Bell.

The following offseason, focus on the defense...extend Tuitt to a long term deal and retain Shazier using the fifth year option.

Wow! The way that aligns one might actually suspect that the guys running the team know what they are doing. Keep four of your most valuable assets without breaking the bank

Correct me if I'm wrong but if you franchise tag bell this coming offseason wouldn't you either have to pay him or cut him the next year?

Yeah...or you could franchise him again (but it requires a 20% raise).

Well then won't that make , focusing on the defense The following offseason just a bit harder?

Speculation and opinion is what we do here. Its what fans specialize in. It was actually the topic of the OP. Fans do it...and the team does it.
