I agree but I think people see Bryant not secure a jump ball or 3 in the last few weeks so they are down on him. This is the same guy who took a 9 yard pass 90 yards on one of the best defensive backfield in the league and he wasn't touched once.Brown wasnt just a stud from day one, the fact that bryant has a head start on a productive career and gets to play across from one of the best and have one of the best throwing to him with an OC that LOVES WRs of his size in his offense....guy has a bright future
I have really changed my stance on bryant...i think hes gonna be special. Seems to be taking the right steps towards focusing on football and staying clean, of course time will tell. He moved his mom next to him or something, maybe most adults dont need a baby sitter..but some might and if he recognizes that, then wonderful.
People saying he cant catch or cant contest a jump ball are wrong though, thats regurgitating pre draft reporting. Wheaton had vice grips for hands in college, cant say ive seen that from him too much at this level
Wheaton showed something in the Seattle game but let's be honest, 2 years in most people were waiting on Wheaton to show us something.
We can find another Wheaton in the draft but we will probably never find another 6'-4" WR who runs a 4.4 in the 4th rd. Bryant has been ahead of schedule from the moment he stepped on the field. It would be downright foolish to choose Wheaton over Bryant.Steelers 27

It's the higher ceiling, higher floor thing.
Wheaton doesn't have tremendous upside, but no real downside either. You know what you got with him. His ceiling and floor are reminiscent of a ranch style house.
Bryant, on the other hand, has massive potential, but might never come close to fulfilling his promise. He'll get you some explosive splash plays because of his raw gifts, but is not anywhere close to dependable yet. His ceiling and floor are like building the Empire State Building next to the Grand Canyon.Steeler teams featuring stat-driven, me-first, fantasy-football-darling diva types such as Antonio Brown & Le'Veon Bell won no championships.
Super Bowl winning Steeler teams were built around a dynamic, in-your-face defense plus blue-collar, hard-hitting, no-nonsense football players on offense such as Hines Ward & Jerome Bettis.
We don't want Juju & Conner to replace what we lost in Brown & Bell.
We are counting on Juju & Conner to return us to the glory we once had with Hines & The Bus.Comment

With AB on the team I think you have to try for the guy with the higher ceiling. It's the higher ceiling, higher floor thing.

I haven't seen enough from Wheaton to think we couldn't find another 5' 11" WR with good hands. We seem to do it all the time but it's rare to find a guy Bryants size who can catch a bubble screen underneath and make 4 guys miss.
Dude is a freak and has a ton of upside but he is definitely a risk considering his off field problems.
Hopefully we can keep both.Steelers 27

know why i love this thread?
Because after his rookie season people were ready to dump wheaton and calling him a bust. After his second season, people wondered why he didn't beat out Bryant.
Now, here we are. Whatever happens, turns out he was a very solid draft pick.2013 MNF Executive Champion!Comment

lmao.. exactly. This board was all over Wheaton after his rookie year. Gotta give these guys a little time to mature in this offense. Regardless it's a good problem to have.know why i love this thread?

Roethlisberger: Bryant has to “toughen up”
Posted by Zac Jackson on January 5, 2016, 12:57 PM EST
The Steelers weren’t the same offense the last two weeks of the regular season that they were for much of the last two seasons.
Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger said on 93.7 The Fan in Pittsburgh Tuesday morning that getting back to where the offense should be for the postseason will require more from wide receiver Martavis Bryant, who had one catch for no gain in last week’s win in Cleveland.
“Not that I’m shying from saying this [to Bryant]. It comes from love,” Roethlisberger said. “He needs to understand that…at this time of year you have to toughen up. You have to make tough plays, you have to make tough catches and you have to find ways to do everything you can to help this team.
“He was sick last week and that got him behind a little bit. But I love to challenge him. We all do. The sky is the limit for him. I want to challenge him to be the best in the world, and it’s really up to him with what he wants to do with that challenge.
“Does he want to crumble and wilt and pout and let it bother him? Or does he want to rise up, step up, say ‘I’ll take that challenge’ and does he want to be the best in the world?”
Bryant has scored 15 touchdowns in 21 career games but has been kept out of the end zone in four straight games. He had 10 catches for 87 yards vs. the Broncos on Dec. 20 but has two catches since.
Roethlisberger appears on The Cook and Poni Show every Tuesday.
“We need a big postseason from Martavis,” Roethlisberger said later in the interview. “We know defenses will be tuned in to [Antonio Brown] so we need other guys to step up.
“We need Martavis to grow and be tough. We need Steeler tough from him.”
Steelers Coach Mike Tomlin said Tuesday that Bryant had a minor injury last week.
“We’re excited about preparing this week with Martavis and everyone else,” Tomlin said.

Bryant has played in less than half the games as Wheat (not only younger, not even active in the beginning of last season AND SUSPENDED to start this season.)
Bryant has started less than half the games as WHEATON (Bryant has only 8 starts.)
Yet Bryant has scored TWICE as many touchdowns, and has nearly as many yards.
Heck, Bryant scored more points than Wheaton IN HIS ROOKIE SEASON (10 active games) than Wheaton has had in his THREE SEASON CAREER.
Wheat has all of ONE game with over 100 yards in THREE SEASONS. Bryant has done it 5 times in less than half the games played.
Nevermind the talent disparity, Bryant has been WAY more productive.
Bryant has a few bad games and we forget how far ahead of expectations he has been.Last edited by Captain Lemming; 01-06-2016, 04:02 AM.sigpic
In view of the fact that Mike Tomlin has matched Cowhers record I give him the designation:

Thats what it is exactly. Drops a pass or cant come down with a jump ball its an its automatic reversion to "suspect hands" scouting report narrative. I was his biggest critic coming out, the guy has played brilliantly.

The occasional highlight reel is nice, but on third down I'd rather have reliability.
We got our "6-PACK" - time to work on a CASE!

I think some of us have a nagging concern that the reason he got suspended isn't going to stop going forward. Hopefully he learned his lesson, but you would also hope that he wasn't stupid enough to do what he did and get suspended in the first placeBryant has played in less than half the games as Wheat (not only younger, not even active in the beginning of last season AND SUSPENDED to start this season.)

My point in starting the thread was you know you have a solid NFL receiver in Wheaton, but with Bryant we see extremes of incredible talent on the field and incredible stupidity off the field."My team, may they always be right, but right or wrong...MY TEAM!"Comment

i think he really hurt us by getting suspended, i think he would have been a difference maker in the game vs the patriots. But I am willing to give him a pass before writing him off as Josh Gordon or Justin Blackmon. Sometimes guys grow up, sometimes they need a wake up call for it to happen.
If he gets hit again for a 10 game suspension, his future with the team becomes very much in doubtComment

then Ben needs to stop throwing jump balls.
99% of the time Bryant is running past his man and has to wait on a pass.
He could definitely have more production if he could high point the ball but he lasted until the 4th because he is raw.Steelers 27
