In view of the fact that Mike Tomlin has matched Cowhers record I give him the designation:

He's been invisible as a pass rusher and was a big part of the run defense getting gashed early this season.

The Steelers are paying him premium money and getting zero production. Worilds is far from the only culprit on the defense, but any defense needs a pass rush to succeed, and Worilds is not providing it.
You're worried about him only ending up with 4 sacks? He sets the edge in the run game and he's gonna end up with less than 30 tackles. THAT is the problem.

If it were me, I'd bench him and start Moats in his spot. Let Jimmy play his old spot until JJ comes back.

Steelers scheming Worilds out of what he does best

              by Mark Kaboly

Sometimes the scheme helps a player.

Sometime the scheme doesn’t help a player.

Dick LeBeau’s new third-and-long scheme of putting the newly minted $10 million pass-rushing linebacker Jason Worilds in the middle of the field as an inside pass rusher/spy isn’t doing anything to help Worilds pressure the quarterback.

That’s part of the reason why Worilds has only one sack, three quarterback pressures, no forced turnovers and only eight tackles a quarter of the way through the season.

Remember, Worilds is the same guy who shoved LaMarr Woodley aside at outside linebacker a year ago and went on to lead the team in sacks with eight – seven of which came over the final eight games he played last year.

Bottom line is that Worilds isn’t being put in a position to get to the quarterback – at least over the last two games.

The way pass-rushing linebackers sack the quarterback is in obvious throwing situations. Those obvious throwing situations are third-and-long.

The last two weeks, Worilds has played a new role in third-and-long situations that might be better off for the team, but it is limiting his ability to get to the quarterback.

Ten times against the Buccaneers did LeBeau go to, what I call his ‘lulu’ formation (sorry for a Varsity Blues reference) on defense.

It’s a formation that has Brett Keisel and either Arthur Moats or James Harrison as outside pass-rushing linebackers, a defensive lineman (usually Cam Heyward), Worilds lined up as a roaming inside linebacker in front of the regular inside linebackers in Sean Spence and Lawrence Timmons.

Different combinations rush the quarterback which makes it difficult to block and what is attractive to the Steelers, but not Worilds.

Against Carolina, Worilds was a spy first then rush – which doesn’t get you to the quarterback much. Against Tampa, he was much of the same.

The Steelers are doing that because Worilds has the speed to do it and can rush the passer at different angles. But when a guy was so successful coming off the edge last year and creating pressure, why change now?

A new wrinkle? That’s all I can think of.

A new wrinkle that isn’t very conducive for Worilds to do what he does best – rush the quarterback.

Always an excuse with worilds....at some point its time to chalk it up as a loss. Im all for defending a player as they progress and grow as a player, but we are on year 5 with a pricey pricey contract

Its not like hes regressed either, hes never been worth a damn in any aspect of the game besides the occasional unblocked sack. Hes in the Evander Hood tier of draft/depth chart failures only they are paying him $10 million this season to get washed out of plays or watch other guys make the tackle.

                  He. is. so. bad.

Second worst player on the defense, with Cam Thomas being the clear cut #1 biggest piece of roster garbage.

Dont worry though, at least Kaboly and Bouchette thought he looked on a different level and unblockable in TC.......thats Hood status right there. Kaboly is just a Worilds fan boy apparently

We know the author has to be wrong because LeBeau NEVER makes adjustments or changes to his scheme.
As many on this site think ... The Rooney's suck, Colbert sucks, Tomlin sucks, the coaches suck, and the players suck.

                    but Go Steelers!!!

More accurately..."always an excuse for LeBeau." At some time we have to realize he has lost it and his defense doesn't work anymore...chalk him up as a loss and move on!

This is looking at the box score and making an opinion....makes me think you have never watched worilds ever. Ive seen sock puppets more disruptive.

I guess you can find a youtube clip on on getting a sack here and there

This is not new. Worilds got his sack against Brady last year while playing a middle zone. Brady, who runs a 7.5 40 slid about an inch behind the LOS while Worilds was running at him from his zone responsibility. Also Worilds got a sack last year playing ROLB where he came in on Manning unblocked. So the idea that Worilds is some great pass rushing LOLB is non-sense. He rushes the QB a lot and only got a sack this year because he was one on one with a TE and the QB held the ball too long. Some time this year he'll go off for a few sacks and people will once again be screaming to pay him.

...or you can bet the future on Jarvis Jones (probably can't hear me snickering right now) who is very underwhelming for the supposed best prepared LB for our defense in his draft from the supposed best conference in college football. The reality is that we don't have the OLBs necessary for Lebeau's defense to work, but we'll keep plugging along hoping the miracle occurs with Jones and the defensive line keeps occupying blockers versus going after the QB.

the line is not "occupying blockers"....they are playing heyward at 4 tech, mcclendon at 1 tech, and it doesnt matter where they play thomas because he doenst occupy, collapse, disengage anything.

Watch the games, you might learn something

Jones was on pace for 10+ sacks before his injury. Worilds has been abysmal this year. When I saw him rushing from the outside during last two games, he was easily handled, with no push or pressure.
