Ed: ‘Never Say Never’ On James Harrison Returning

He signed with Cincinnati but saw limited snaps. Harrison recorded two sacks and an interception in 15 games but was primarily used as pass rushing specialist.
A similar role awaits in Pittsburgh.

I don't believe that the "Next man up" mantra means the "Next young man up" it means whoever is next on the depth chart, whether that be a 36 year old James Harrison or a 22 or 23 year old HoJo or 25 year old Moats, it's the next guy on the depth chart. If the Steelers bring a player into the organization that moves ahead of the current players, well, then he's the "Next man up". The Steelers will try to make the "Next man up" be the most capable player they can find or have on the roster.I love Harrison...but to preach next man up and still reach back into the past is two different messages your relaying to your team.
I told my wife when we saw Porter on the sideline...we need that man to suit up again (jokingly). Next man up means lets go Moats and HO JO your
promoted to our new Backup LB. Lets go!
Well with that said...Hope it works out and Harrison has a few sacks left in him.
You don't get playing time just because you're on the roster, they kept HoJo to have him develop, not to play meaningful downs, IMO. The Steelers are trying to win games right now, not next year, they will put their best players on the field to try and accomplish that goal. If its Jones, fine, if its Harrison, fine, but Tomlin, Haley and Lebeau are going to put the players on the field that they believe give them the best chance to win games.

Does Tuitt play linebacker now? When did they move him from DE? I guess I should have said, "the linebacker contributing the least", if Harrison is outplaying a young guy from the PS, the young guy will get cut, the Steelers want to win games now, this year, they'll worry about next year when this year ends.
Not to mention the roster for this team will have changed by the time they need to make that decision, I'm sure there will be other injuries between now and the time Shazier and Jones are ready to play again. If Harrison isn't performing, he'll be cut, period, he knows that, the Steelers know that, and the FO knows that.

One injury and we're looking at people sitting on couches? Marvin Lewis on James Harrison:
“I wish we could have got him on the field more often. I feel bad about (that). I thought we’d have an opportunity to really get him out there more often but the way offense dictated to us, we didn’t get that chance very often. James was a tremendous role model and example of how you play the game. He’s a great man. He did a great job for us this last year. He really helped us immensely, helped us win the division. He made critical plays at critical moments.”Steeler teams featuring stat-driven, me-first, fantasy-football-darling diva types such as Antonio Brown & Le'Veon Bell won no championships.
Super Bowl winning Steeler teams were built around a dynamic, in-your-face defense plus blue-collar, hard-hitting, no-nonsense football players on offense such as Hines Ward & Jerome Bettis.
We don't want Juju & Conner to replace what we lost in Brown & Bell.
We are counting on Juju & Conner to return us to the glory we once had with Hines & The Bus.Comment

This is a football message board. What's with the word of the day from Professor Windy City? Most people think he just complimented the board. I'd have gone with boot licker, brown noser, back scratcher, apple polisher, maybe even lackey or flunkey. I ain't not wanting no learning when I's come here!sigpicComment

There will be competition in practice for time on the field. If the Moats and/or HoJo can beat Harrison out for the job, they'll see the field, if they can't they won't. Younger isn't always better, when you're trying to win games now. The Steelers are 2-1 and trying to win enough games to get into the post season this year, not next year or 3 years from now. The best players get on the field, period, there's no reason to take a risk with a lesser player (whoever that is, Harrison or Moats or Jones). It's not like they're spending money that will be dead money next year when Harrison retires again, it's going to cost them the league minimum (in all likelihood).
So, you tell me, are you playing Moats and Jones over Harrison even if they're not getting the job done? You should probably review the definition of sycophant. While I'm a huge Harrison fan, I've never said he should get the job without competition. Right now, since, the Steelers are in the hunt for the playoffs, wouldn't playing the best players be the best course of action?
I'm certain Moats will be the starter, it's unlikely that Harrison is ready to play right now, he may see a few snaps to see what he may be able to provide once he gets up to speed from a conditioning standpoint, but that's it for now I would think.
No young player's growth is being held back, no young player that is being looked at as a major contributor is being sent to the bench and no young player with potential will be lost to another team. Signing Harrison is a stop gap to try and keep the defense on the right path until injured players are ready to return. JJ and Shazier aren't being released when they're ready to return in favor of James Harrison. HoJo is a project and if gets released, then he wasn't performing at a high enough level.

Threads about James Harrison should contain mostly grunts of approval...let's try to keep the multisyllabic words to a minimum.
