De-valuing the CB position, having a system in place that is so complex, that just saying the actual play takes so long that the players are not in position when the ball is snapped. Think that might be a problem? I do. Being overly complex is horse turds, especially when all that complexity no longer tricks the opponent as much as it confuses our own players. Just think about that. I would much prefer a system that allows players to not need to think so much, but rather, just react in an aggressive fashion. The fact that our system doesn't allow for that is pathetic, moronic, idiotic, ego-saving-based and embarrassing.
Spot on... the lack of INT's by our DB's is the main problem. Our best CB for years has no ball skills. None.

We went to three super bowls and won two of them with that same type of secondary. Our biggest problemS are tackling and getting to the qb. Tackling should NEVER be an issue. but for some reason, our guys are whiffing on nearly every play. Team are scheming two and three step drops to take advantage of soft coverage and to neutralize our pass rush. The ten yard cushion is too predictable.

That sounds like a personnel problem...

In any case, Keenan Lewis, whom people still lament not keeping, had all of 1 INT for us...

Cortez Allen, who has has a much shorter career and fewer starts, has only 1 less INT in his career and even returned one for a TD last year...he has some ball skills...

Nobody on the defense, even the players we expected to do well, has played particularly well for the last six quarters...that needs to change on Sunday....
Actually, my post was NOT about you...but, if the shoe fits, feel free to lace that &!+€# up and wear it.

Keenan Lewis had 4 INT's last year in NO.

No, I think guys like Deshea never got the credit he deserved. He was always good for 2 or 3 INT's every year.

Troy was also a beast in his prime but the rest of our secondary was pedestrian when it came to catching the ball.

I think it's time to draft some CB's before the 3rd round next year.

What the Steelers secondary really needs is a couple of white cornerbacks. Maybe we could find a pair out there in the free agent market.
Obviously the standard is the standard.

But this is a PERSONNEL issue like everything else Dizz.

                    You guys keep saying:

Corners can't catch.......but it's THE COACHES FAULT we have no turnovers?
NT can't occupy blockers.......But it is COACHES FAULT he can't?
Our young outside linebacker pass rush specialist is BOTH to weak AND slow....coaches fault our pass rush is weak?

DL is an idiot because he is not quick enough to bench HIS ONLY PROBOWL PLAYER from last season....AFTER ONE GAME? Really?

Yes I know the solution is to START a raw 6 round NT who impressed NOBODY against 18 year old kids. That will fix everything.

Tight coverage and blitzes create TO, not 10 yd cushion and passive. When is the last time we have seen the Steelers bring a 6 or more man blitz. Well news flash most teams do except DL and that's why he will and continue to be last in creating them. And spare me about sending 5 that not a real blitz , especially when some teams keep 7 players in to protect.

it's a coaching AND GM problem

who on here thinks Ike should have returned? Not many...
who thought Cortez Allen was the future? Not many...
who has said NT was important in our D and should have been addressed earlier in the draft? I did.. the solution should have been to draft a legit NT the year before Hampton was sent packing. Sure we tried but if you draft 4 NT's late and miss on all of them it's a drafting issue.

I have no problem giving Shazier reps until he is up to speed, but we overpaid Woodley AND Worilds IMO. Shouldn't have been put in that position but it happened due to trying to win one more with some old ass vets.

Do you REALLY THINK OUR GUYS IN TIGHT COVERAGE is smart? Really?

The idea that DL never employs tight coverage is a myth.
You have to have the players.
Ike has lined up right on a receiver PLENTY. That is THE ONLY POSSIBLE WAY he has COMPLETELY SHUT DOWN so many elite receivers over the years.
                          Just like Rod did.
Ike can't do that anymore and it would be STUPID to try.
                          Gay? Almost never.
Its player who dictate how DL uses them.

Ike took a pay cut to return. Did the organization have a viable option to replace Ike?

What if there wasnt a legit NT to be had before Hampton was sent packing? Easier said than done to replace players.

They didn't over pay Woodley based on the information they had. At the time the arrow for Woodley was pointing upwards. No one could predict he would suffer injury after injury.

The jury still out on Cortez.

The signed Worilds as a stop gap. Maybe because there wasn't anyone available that was better? They don't owe him anything after this season.

As we can see it's been difficult to replace those old ass vets. It's never easy to replace good/great players.

You have just cited from top to bottom in every single level of player, personnel screw ups, yet we keep getting "Seattle does this and Seattle does that". Seattle has great defensive PLAYERS in there prime. We have the results of YEARS on mistakes in personell.

We will see where Seattle is in the cycle of replacing their players in 3 to 5 years. Not one team in the league can stay on top forever. We are at least fortunate that the Steelers can remain competitive.
