The situation changed. Once they got Wilson then the facts changed. If this indeed got Pickett's panties twisted then that is just further proof that he doesn't have the mental toughness to be a franchise QB.
Read what Bradshaw went through with Noll. Pickett would have had an emotional breakdown if he had to endure that.
Pickett To Eagles

I believe the answer is yes.
Just depends on whether he's interested in doing so.
He could say no and go to UFA.
We'd for sure want to talk before trading him.
Since a deal hasn't happened, this could be part of it (him not being interested in a low cost extension instead of the 5th year option)
The one major red flag on Fields for me; he's the anti-Pickett in the 4th quarter and crunch time, 3 TDs and 10 INTs when trailing with <4 minutes. They will get Tomlin's panties in a bunch.Leave a comment:

This trade seemed pretty abrupt tbh especially given the team has just 1 QB on the roster now. It also sort of doesn't make sense that the Eagles would be the team giving the best return when you factor in the QB situation currently in the NFC. But maybe idk, like I said I wouldn't be surprised if Eagles end up trading him to another team.
We complain that the Steelers hold on to high draft picks too long, then they move away from one quickly and we're complaining that they didn't get enough. They got what the market was offering. He wasn't going to lead the Steelers to a deep playoff run or Super Bowl while Watt and Minkah are in their prime. Khan made the moves he thinks will not only get the Steelers into the playoffs but possibly a run at the title.

How is Pickett taking the low road? Some of you clearly just really don't like him that much is obvious. The guy wants to start, Tomlin told him he wouldn't start after the team signed Wilson, something that Pickett apparently didn't even find out about until it was announced to the public. So he asked to be moved, it's that simple. If anything the team took the low road by trading him to the Eagles.
As far as why players like Tomlin, I honestly am starting to wonder that myself, it sure isn't because he puts them in the best position to succeed. I think because he's more of a pal than a coach.
But the priority is to make the team better. And even if we get Wilson from 2 years ago, we probably did that.Leave a comment:

The problem with this offense and this team right now is hiring people who were fired and failed elsewhere.
Matt Canada was a failed OC in college.
Trubisky failed in Chicago
Russ failed to stick in Denver
Arthur Smith failed as a HC in ATL
and we all keep looking back 3 years ago hoping they could recreate that magic for us.
At some point, we have to start hiring people on the rise if we want this offense to be great and innovative.Leave a comment:

NC, that is not my interpretation, it is what is being reported "He was explicitly told by the Steelers Wilson would start", reneging on what was previously told to him, ie, he wanted to compete but was told nope. Also, why would Wilson sign with the Steelers at vet minimum if he wasn't told he would be the starter? Come on.Leave a comment:

Agreed. I mean, I can?t fault our FO for bringing in Russ for a dollar and some change but Kenny lost his job to injury and only had 1.5 games without Canada. The. he is said to be QB1 with competition and finds out about Russ on IG and is now told he is QB2.
Damn right I want traded. They are treating him like Rudolph. No way I would stick with an organization who just lied to me.
Things change so I don?t blame our FO for grabbing Russ but if this is how you do it.. I?ll find another team to be a backup on.
Now we have Russ and who else? We screwed this up if Russ doesn?t knock it out the park. Guess we are now drafting Penix or.. gulp, Nix or JJ??? Maybe we gamble this year and draft a QB next year in the first?
If it works Khan is a genius. If not, oh boy?Leave a comment:

dumb question (i'm about to drop this in 2 threads in hopes it is seen)
My big resistance on getting Fields is that 5th year option. But, is it possible to trade for him and get him to sign an extension with roster bonuses... i.e., look like a deal he'd want, but give the team a chance to feel him out on the cheap?
Just depends on whether he's interested in doing so.

Tomlin said Wilson would get 1st reps in OTAs. It's YOUR interpretation that Pickett wasn't going to start the season. So he asked to be moved, it's that simple. Why ask to be moved if you are backing up a 36 yr old QB? Sit and learn for a season (it didn't seem to hurt Jordan Love's game). If anything the team took the low road by trading him to the Eagles. Eagles reached out to the Steelers, not the other way around if you read the latest reports.

Contradicts the above. Isn't Fields someone who failed elsewhere? I don't want a player that another team wants rid of. We already have one of those in Wilson.Leave a comment:

It's the timing of Tomlin's comments to Pickett that make all the difference. This time of year NOTHING is static. It wasn't obvious early on that Wilson would sign with PIT. Thus Tomlin's comment that Pickett was QB1. But Tomlin also said he would have competition. Everything Tomlin said, when he said it, was likely truthful.
And riddle me this; if Tomlin is such a liar to players how is it he gets high marks from nearly everyone that plays for him?
The contrast between how Pickett handled himself compared to Rudolph is stark. If anything, Rudolph was treated worse but never took the low road.

i hope kenny tears it up with the eagles. wilson is just another one of tomlins home boys.
wilson is a has been now. this will not make them any better than they were last year.
he cant move around like when he was younger and the line isn`t any better. i can see him on his ass
just as much as kenny was. steelers got away with this with ben because it was hard to bring him down
and he was big enough to take a good hit & keep on ticking. kenny on the other hand is small and could`nt
take the pounding so he threw the ball in fear at times. not happy with this event at all.Leave a comment:

I mean.. with all the lying going on why get honest now?
and you may have been able to get more value if Kenny wants out after camp and another team had an injury?
Oh well..
but this does make it obvious QB will be drafted or we make a play for Fields.Leave a comment:

Yeah, I don't think it went down exactly like that and agree that we may never know the full story.
But it does seem apparent that Kenny lost the support of the team and that's the most surprising thing for me. Part of that may be that we had some head-cases on the team. And part of it may be that Kenny is a bit of a head-case himself.
I'm disappointed with how things went with Kenny. I have to admit, I became a bit of a homer and KP8 fan after we drafted him. I'm a Pitt alum and it just felt like a perfect story and he seemed like a generally great kid. But I do feel some sense of relief that we've cleaned the slate. I really couldn't take much more of this utterly pathetic offense. There was a LOT of blame to go around and just about anyone you could point a finger at, is gone. Other than Tomlin.
There's really no place to go, other than up, for this offense.
