A center was taken in the first round in 9 of the last 15 drafts. It's more the rule than the exception.

Agreed on Weidl, and I don't think the fans give him the credit he deserves. If the Steelers have a draft similar to last year's, then I think the team has to make a move to promote him - which would really just maintain the same structure but give him a new title and more money.
As far as no C in the first, I agree in principle but there are always exceptions to those rules. If they do draft JPJ in the first, I trust that Weidl also feels the same but decided this guy is worth the pick. I'll trust his judgment until I lose faith in it - the way I did with Colbert the last 5 or so years.Comment

I give Weidl most of the credit for the draft. After all, he was brought in as the 'personnel guy'. In fact, I was worried that if the Steelers ended up with a deep playoff run Weidl might have been grabbed for a GM position by some team. Until he arrived the Steelers fumbled and bumbled trying to rebuild their OL. Some teams seem to do it in a season. The Steelers are working on Yr4!

Not just the OL, ILB, CB, etc. Broken record, but it's been the longstanding Colbert philosophy of "filling holes before the draft", but they're filling in holes with dirt that gets washed away in a strong rain. Basically making sure you have a decent backup if the draft falls through, and they end up starting for a year and everyone realizes why they were so cheap in FA.

I think it goes beyond the filling the holes before the draft philosophy. I'd say it is more about hits and misses, and negligence. You hit on your draft picks and those "paper over holes" guys are only backups, and probably very good backups. You hit on your big trade up for Bush in 2019, you aren't forced to paper over with three ILBs last off-season. And the negligence? The OL. When the Steelers drafted a center project in Green, 87th overall in 2021, he was the highest drafted Steeler OL since.....David Decastro in 2012.Comment

I will tip my hat to Tomlin if he has a winning record and the team makes the play-offs in the upcoming season.Comment

Klemm. He was the OL coach and Assist HC in 2022. In 2023 he was the Patriots OL coach.Steelers 27

I think you're right that he left in-season. But IIRC, I think we had relieved him of his duties at that point. Just didn't fire him before the end of the season (as is the Steelers way).Comment

I thought he was still in Oregon before googling which would be weird given how everyone is all about the Center from Oregon.Steelers 27

Maybe. But I have no idea how much influence he had on the pick. Some lowly scout could have taken the fall. Kahn put several new faces in the scouting dept when he took over.Comment
