    Dulac: Tomlin dictates the offense

Dulac reveals the worst kept secret in sports: Tomlin is the one keeping the lid on the offense, as I've been saying for some time. This doesn't get magically better next year when Canada is replaced by the next lackey OC. Simple, safe routes requiring perfect execution since the D knows what is coming.

Among starting quarterbacks this season, only three of them have attempted a lower percentage of deep passes than the Pittsburgh Steelers’ Kenny Pickett. Through nine games, he has attempted just 20 passes of 20 or more air yards out of 253 total pass attempts, or just 7.9 percent. Only Jared Goff, Daniel Jones—who is done […]

I don't think that's a big surprise. But I think that within Tomlin's conservative directive, should be the ability to create plays that get receivers open. And the ability to create plays that don't telegraph to the defense what's coming.

Agreed, that's the deadly combination -- safe AND simple. Safe and smart/clever is the sweet spot.

Better QB = less conservative offense

Has anyone seen anything this season that gives you confidence that having KP "let 'er rip" results in wins?

Again, "let 'er rip" isn't the only way to open up the offense. Use play-action, scheme up freebies, i.e. wide open throws, put a defender in conflict, etc.

The Steelers just basically mail in the passing game with a handful of safe routes they run over and over and over and every D in the league knows it before the snap.

I've got to agree with you on that.

              This.
You can be relatively safe, yet have some semblance of an offensive attack.

I'm not saying that KP has no limitations, but even a smidgen of competence from the coaching end would do a world of good for this offense. IMO.

Based on Tomlin?s comments about Kenny needing to be better this week, I think Kenny is holding himself back more than Tomlin.

When guys are open the QB misses them.

You can even do it with Steelers Football (tm) -- look at what Cowher did in '92, power running, play-action, heavy TE usage.

All the more reason to help him out with scheme, if he misses the one open guy in 20 plays it's magnified.

I don't. I think Tomlin is largely just saying what he knows the fans want to hear.

This offense is a Pinto, if Kenny drives it perfectly they might score 3 more PPG, and nobody can play perfectly.

Sorry, we're stuck with this until a serious OC is brought in.

You could be right; trying to keep the wolves at bay. For now.

I can't really argue with that unfortunately. One glimmer of hope is that the run game seems to be coming alive. Maybe we can ground-and-pound our way into 20+ points per game. And if we can run consistently, surely things will improve in the passing game.
