I don't know if I like the idea, but "you have to win by 4" makes FGs less appealing in OT.
I think making FGs different points for different lengths would be too much of a change at the NFL level. On one hand, it would add some additional strategy I guess (take a penalty to move 5 yards back and get more points?). But on the other, it feels like a reward for being bad (i.e. offense couldn't move in).
I don't think they should do this, but if they changed how many points FGs were worth, I think it would be better to give more points for shorter FGs than longer ones (maybe 1 pt for 50+, 2 pts for 35 - 49, 3 pts inside 35). Then, there's less incentive to settle for a long FG and more incentive to get in closer. But not additional incentive to kick a FG from the 5 instead of going for the TD.
But I wouldn't want to put that into play without seeing what it looks like in the NCAA (or more likely something like the XFL). Eliminating FGs might also be kind of interesting to see in a minor league or the CFL or something.
I think getting rid of timeouts in the last two minutes would make the games faster (which the league probably doesn't want because it costs them ad breaks). But it would also reduce the number of comebacks, which are exciting.
