but that was 16 years ago and with a different staff
there has been a load of running backs drafted late or signed as UDFA since then that haven't registered much of anything
the Backs who have done well under this staff (bell, mendy) have been high draft choicesLast edited by NJ-STEELER; 04-24-2021, 11:49 PM.Comment

willie was the last late round/ UDFA RB to make a difference.

Steelers 1st round backs since Franco nearly 50 years ago:
Greg Hawthorne
Walter Abercrombie
Tim Worley
Rashard Mendenhall
Thousand yard seasons total- TWO
Give me Faneca over Mendy any day of the week.
Last former Steeler back to bring a Lombardi to the great state of Pennsylvania? He like Willie was a former undrafted free agent.
He did it in 2017.
His name?
Lagerett Blount...too bad it was for the Eagles...to go along with his Pats rings.
I remember watching that draft at Buffalo Wild Wings in here in Boise, and people loved his slide in that draft as they hate him here for clocking a BSU player in college.
Blount shows how EASY it is to get yourself a championship caliber back. He was our BACKUP.sigpic

dude
give me 1 example of a late round guy doing well on this team under this staff.
I'm someone who does believe you can get find a quality back later in the draft but it has not occurred with this regime. (GM, head coach, position coach, scouts, position scouts)
the OL is bad now but it hasn't been bad for 16 years to not have someone develop in that time
they've tried for many years to hit on a late back and it hasn't worked.
to the point we are at now...desperate... last in the league in rushing
if the RB class was deep into the 2nd or 3rd round, I would agree with you we should be able to find one.
but by all prognostications in its the top 3 and then a big drop off.
i do not want someone who is going to compare to the snells, mcfarlands, samuels they have trotted out there
we need better talent at that positionComment

Was from a listener.
Compared Colbert's record of drafting CBs to RBs.
I think we all know how bad the CB drafting has been. But I didn't realize how bad the RB picks have been.Comment

But if everything is equal, I address the oline as a need priority. Why?
You mention all our "misses" at RB. But Conner made the probowl and we led the league in red zone DESPITE the admittedly fragile Conner starting. Better redzone than ANY Bell team.
Why?
Oline was superb that season.
Bell? How great has he looked behind a garbage oline on the Jets?
How did his entire KC offensive juggernaut team look with a compromised oline in the SB?Last edited by Captain Lemming; 04-25-2021, 10:56 AM.sigpic

Again, I'm talking 1st round. I don't mind one in the 2nd. "If" a first round back is clearly higher than oline I'm not totally against it.

but here's another thing to think about. after the big 3 RBs, there will be a big drop off and its supposedly
a Deep draft at OT and the OL in general.
if they go OT in round 1 its likely the 4th/5th best available. if they wait until the 2nd round perhaps its the 9th/10th best.
what's the drop off considering that.
if they feel the drop off at RB is bigger then they should go RB first. thats getting value in the draft
PS. im not sure why you leave franco out in your comparison.
that's 4 championships with a 1st round RBLast edited by NJ-STEELER; 04-25-2021, 09:33 PM.Comment

a 2nd round OL would be the highest drafted player on the OL other then decastro, who is likely gone soonComment
