A Positive View of they Draft

As I read some draft profiles it is interesting that the Steelers almost universally picked players that haven't reached their peaks, rather than guys that dominated at their position in college.
Maybe this is the culture they want in the locker room? Guys that aren't already superstars, guys that are ready to bring their lunch pails to work, build their craft through hard work?Comment
-
Exactly, because the opportunities wont be the same and the competition will be tougher. How is Dobbins going to rush for 1500 yards when he is in a running back by commitee offense behind Mark Ingram and Lamar Jackson running mainly RPO's?Comment
-
Is that 5'8" 203 Barry Sanders you speak of?
No difference between him and 175 huh?
I wonder why the SB era HOF is filled with guys that size yet small and slight like Archer? Rarity.sigpic
In view of the fact that Mike Tomlin has matched Cowhers record I give him the designation:

Despite the intent of this thread - I have to say my enjoyment of the virtual draft has only been exceeded by watching the annual gnashing of teeth, hysteria and doom and gloom that follows on these boards. who needs real housewives when I can get a daily dose of the 'real steeler fans of western PA' telling me the 182nd pick in the draft is a going to be a bust and the steelers should have grabbed the guy that went 186.........
pure entertainment!!!
My plan is to first see if there's a camp in July. then see if there's a season in sept. then I'll look at the final 53 and depending on their production start my second guessing of Colbert at that point.....

Capt, stay with me now okay? I could have used Gurley as an example, or I could have used Adrian Peterson. Or the Swift kid just drafted in Detriot.
I get what your implying but we've seen this script before. After Rainey & Archer , I just don't think Colbert has that knack for those little RB. Again, do I want McFarland to
pan out? Yes. Do I believe he will? No. But I'd like to be pleasantly surprised.Comment

OK AP and Gurley....heck our own Bell had success. The issue is not whether bigger guys have success. We all know that. Is drafting a shorter guy a recipe for failure?Capt, stay with me now okay? I could have used Gurley as an example, or I could have used Adrian Peterson. Or the Swift kid just drafted in Detriot.

Please follow me. If you do with an open mind...you WILL be persuaded to feel better about the pick.
I will grant you...Colbert HAS missed on small guys.
The question is WHY.
He missed on the kind of small guys that ALWAYS tend to fail in this league.
If he figures out WHY they failed, he CAN draft the right guy. It’s called “learning” from your mistakes.
Rainey and Archer are the kind of backs that rarely pan out BECAUSE they are lightweight...NOT because they are short.
Colberts “mistake” is drafting flyweight guys...not because they are short guys.
You are putting this kid into a category that typically fails league wide.
THAT was Colberts mistake.
Lets say you are correct. In fact you ARE correct, Colbert does NOT historically pick small backs well. The question is why?
He picked backs that are fast but too “light” to excel in this league. League wide, Rainey/ Archer types typically fail.
For example...name the modern era backs under 180 in the HOF. They tend to fail, what we looking at Gail Sayers in the 60s?
McFarland types? What does recent history show?
Guys around Mcfarlands size (5’11” or shorter. Between 198 and 210 pounds) Inducted to the HOF Since 2000.
1. Emmett
2. Thurman Thomas
3. B. Sander
4. M. Faulk
5. C. Martin
6. T. Davis
Even I was surprised when I saw that a clear majority of recent HOF backs are shockingly similar in stature when drafted. They are more common than bigger backs. Top 3 retire rushers in history are on that list.
Frank Gore is top 5 and is BARELY outside that threshold at a listed 212. That is 5 pounds heavier than this kid.
And this is the point:
NOT ONE recent HOF back is a Rainey/Archer type lightweight. Not one.
Add to the above list, the fact that WE DID have success with TWO backs who are in the McFarland size range.
Again...Colbert HAS missed on small guys.
I just showed you WHY.
This guy is NOT like them. He is not the the kind of “small” (short, fast and SLIGHT) that Colbert has failed with.
This guy is the type of shorter back (short and muscular) that have had tremendous succees in the NFL.
Of course there are no guarantees. But if he fails it ainÂ’t because he is another Rainey.Last edited by Captain Lemming; 04-27-2020, 03:08 PM.sigpic

K Whyte is 5'10" and 204. Give credit to Colbert for keeping trying but it's been a long dry spell.Comment
-
Whyte didn't get enough of an opportunity if you ask me. And now Colbert's moved on from him with Mcfarland. Gotta admit that Colbert looks crazy the way he keeps doing this and face planting.Comment
-
And K Whyte had 122 yards in 24 carries. NOT TOO SHABBY.
That is a pretty good “game” for a starting back.
He did not appear to be too small to be effective....like lightweights Archer or Rainey
If the team sees this new kid as an upgrade over Whyte who showed promise in limited touches.... bring it on.sigpic

In all fairness, McFarland is a little bigger than those little dudes.Capt, stay with me now okay? I could have used Gurley as an example, or I could have used Adrian Peterson. Or the Swift kid just drafted in Detriot.
