I'm surprised it doesn't happen more often. Not because of the hometown aspect, but the happiness/quality of life thing. The argument that us everyday people always make is "you would do the same if you were offered more money to move to another job, but is that always true? If you make $1M a year (I want to give a high enough number to us unwashed masses so that we know we don't need more money to feed our families and pay our basic bills) but you have a long commute to and from work every day, you work in a highly stressful environment, you hate your boss, you hate the people you work with, your wife keeps complaining to you that you never spend time with your family etc.. Now you have an opportunity to move to a different job. It's close to home, great people, less stressful, the whole works. The only problem is that they can only pay you $900K - a 10% cut in pay. You will still be making enough money to maintain your lifestyle. You should still be able to retire early, put away enough for your kids to go to whatever college they want, and a nice inheritance for when you are no longer around.....but less money.

The sports situation is usually the reverse. Do you leave a situation that you know, and have success in, and makes you happy, for more money elsewhere? Either way you will have enough money for almost anything you will want for the rest of your life (if you manage your money even remotely well). There is enough anecdotal evidence to suggest that it is often a mistake to chase the dollars.
I'll try to find the reference, but there have been studies that concluded money is not the primary reason for job satisfaction (at least for us ordinary folk). Work environment (people you work with) is #1.

4 years ago I would have never imagined we would say no to 10K more a year.

However, a few years ago my wife and I sat down and wrote a number for how much we would need to feel happy/secure in our fields and the crazy thing is we surpassed that amount. Now in order to do hit that amount we had to find better paying gigs.

My last employer was terrible. Owner was a real POS. I was so happy to give him a 2 day notice.

As in.. TODAY I’m no longer dealing with your crap.

I think I've heard that money is tied to happiness at the lower end of the wage scale, but doesn't increase much over something like 75k. Then can even decrease at very high numbers.

This seems to make sense from a needs pyramid point of view.

For the sake of scientific research, I'm willing to bite the bullet and be the guinea pig. Everybody send me $50M and I will live with it for a year. Then send me another $50M and I will let you know if it increases or decreases my happiness. Please send funds for this experiment to steeler_fan_in_t.o.@gmail.com.

FWIW, repeating experiments is a cornerstone of legitimate scientific research.
