Washington Wants Tomlin

I think that's fair.Or maybe that history simply shows that one coach was placed in a much better situation than the others as much as it proves the correct choice was made? Just playing devils advocate. Whisenhunt was very successful in Arizona with a franchise QB in Warner, but struggled with the likes of Leinart and others who proved to not be at that level. Same with his brief stint in TN with Mettenberg and then rookie Mariotta.
The situation of those coaches can't be ignored when declaring one a better coach over the others. I'm not sure any coach could succeed where Whiz struggled, including Tomlin.
But that still refutes the argument that we hired a terrible coach* just because of his race. In your case, we hired someone we thought was first among equals.
At worst, we know for sure that:
1) Grimm wasn't on anyone else's radar for anything but O-Line Coach
2) Wisenhunt is a terrible coach without a HoF QB (and I believe he pulled himself out of the process before we made a decision, so it's not exactly clear that we could have hired him anyway).
I think it is possible that Tomlin is as bad as Wisenhunt without a HoF QB. Or even that he could have done as well as Tomlin if he was HC (although I don't think he turns around our D like Tomlin did at the beginning of his career). I think talent is more important than coaching, so that makes sense to me. I think that good coaches (like good managers everywhere) surround themselves with good people, listen to their input, and make decisions.
But even with mediocre talent, it's hard to believe Tomlin could do much worse because Whiz has been God awful without Warner.
Given that Tomlin has performed better than other coaches with very good QBs being paid market value (several that are probably better than Ben), I think it's also hard to believe that Whiz automatically does better in Pittsburgh than Tomlin has. I think it's clear that Grimm wasn't head coaching material (at least according to everyone in the league that makes those decisions).
* If you're looking for ridiculous claims, it's hard to get worse than this one IMO.Last edited by Northern_Blitz; 10-08-2019, 04:22 PM.Comment

For the immediate task at hand, I think Tomlin was a better choice then Grimm and Whisenhunt. A rah rah, cliche-driven, cheerleader with "go get 'em boys" punch lines to a franchise QA and a bunch veterans that could go out there and do the rest.Tomlin: Let's unleash hell and "mop the floor" with the competition.Comment

True. That time has past. Cowhers players and coaches are gone. What has he done since.... Yeah yeah, regular season wins.....I know
How is it possible to have the best owner, best front office, best gm, best HC, good/great drafts every year and good FA acquisitions every year, but only have 3 playoff wins in 14 years?Comment

Are you saying you think he was hired because he was the best candidate for the job?
I think that's what they thought. I also think they probably loved the fact that he's from Noll's coaching tree and was mentored by a guy who was a great player for the Steelers who also coached for them. I think it's hard to imagine a glowing recommendation letter from Dungy not meaning a whole lot to the Rooneys.Comment

I've asked this before. Weird that as great as he is, no one has moved on and promoted.
Cowher seemed to lose a corrdinator every couple years.
Can you imagine how hard that was to have to replace those guys and have his squad learn a new system so often? How is it possible to have the best owner, best front office, best gm, best HC, good/great drafts every year and good FA acquisitions every year, but only have 3 playoff wins in 14 years?Comment

It's true that there aren't many of Tomlin's coordinators haven't gone on to be HCs. Bruce Arians is the only one I can think of.
Compare that to BB, who has several of his coordinators that were hired, but few (none?) that were successful HCs.
Also, nice deflection.Comment

Coaches, regardless of how great they are, eventually reach a point when it's time to move on. That may be after 1 year or 20 years, but it eventually happens. That time for Tomlin happened a few years ago. But some people here would have us think that Tomlin should be given a lifetime guaranteed contract. I just don't get it.
If Washington offers a top 5 pick for him, Rooney should be institutionalized if he doesn't take itComment

Can anyone on this board name the posters who have said they "love" Tomlin or that he is a great coach? I don't think I've seen anybody do that even though the posters who want Tomlin booted keep saying there are. Hmmmm. As many on this site think ... The Rooney's suck, Colbert sucks, Tomlin sucks, the coaches suck, and the players suck.
but Go Steelers!!!

There are several posters here that will defend any and every action by Tomlin. I truly believe they're a relative of his. But just to seem 'fair', every so often they'll say something like 'I don't know if I quite agree with that decision, but he's still the best coach we could possibly ever have'.Comment
