I'd believe this more if they actually held him accountable for last year's failure and made him coach this season as a 'prove it'.
Rooney made it perfectly clear last year blaming the kicker for all our woes and claiming there was zero drama. How is it possible to have the best owner, best front office, best gm, best HC, good/great drafts every year and good FA acquisitions every year, but only have 3 playoff wins in 14 years?Comment

I figure they really want BR back, So would he be good with a new coach? I don't believe so.
The right picks make this juicy though. I must admit even as a ball washer.
I believe the time for a new HC is coming with the new CBA and Ben's retirement. If Ben is done with the injury let's say, then the time is golden to move on. Growing pains of the offense and new head coach with all new assistants all in one package. Defense looking good and some very young pieces to move forward with some extra high draft talent. Paints a nice picture for the future. Should continue the Steelers reload not rebuild idea.
I don't see a collage coach coming in. Don't think it would be a offensive coach unless it is to groom the young QB's possibly. And of course if the offensive coach is a better candidate then the next up and coming defensive coach. Was it by plan the last 2 HC's were on the defensive side or just happened to work out that way?
Is is it owner loyalty the coaches stay? Or is it Steeler nations loyalty that has the iconic players and coaches sticking around? Lots of money being made with Steeler nations loyalty. I know this is not a Steelers sound bite but, Just win baby fits here.
IF the SB is really the master plan, then Tomlin stays and Big Ben has a rejuvenated comeback to glory. But if money and continued reloading is the plan trade Tomlin let Ben walk off into the sunset etc.
Good possibility all goes to heck with the new CBA and we experience the 80's all over again or worse.Comment

Tomlin is a good coach. Not great - he's come up short too many times with the talent he's had. He's never had a losing season, but he's also had a franchise qb for his entire coaching tenure. I think 8 wins is kind of the minimum expectation with a franchise qb. If he was traded, who replaces him? I have no idea. But I never heard of Tomlin before he was hired. I doubt many people knew who Cowher was, either. I trust that this franchise can find a capable replacement.
When Gruden was traded, he brought back 2 first round picks and a second. If the Steelers get a haul like that, they have to take it.Comment

They were; that's exactly why he only got a ONE YEAR extension and not more. Because this was a "prove it" year. They didn't want a lame duck look for Tomlin. That's not a look you want the team to have toward him. They did the right thing for team harmony towards the coach but they also did the right thing in case they want to let him go..then he could have two years service pay behind him. That's classy by the Rooney's.
But if Snyder wants him, I'll happily take at least a second round pick and anything else we can get for him.Comment

FYI, Bill Cowher, postgame, said the call to choose the end of field in THAT stadium was a good decision, given 1) the wind and 2) how the defense was playing. Knowing that he also coached in that field, I actually thought, "maybe that's why those guys COACH and we aren't"...
Looks to me like it worked out, then Juju fumbled... just an observation.2013 MNF Executive Champion!Comment

This opinion is dumb. Rooney rule requires that you INTERVIEW a minority, not HIRE them. They did that. If you think they hired him because he's black, well... that would be dumb of them. They have a franchise to run and a lot of money on the line and why would you risk that?
You've heard him speak. He got in there and sold himself better than any other person did. Think of how "charming/motivating" he sounded to you the first few times you heard him give his own coach speak.
He's lasted this long because they're the 2nd best team during the era of Tom Brady (the GOAT @ QB), with a couple of SB appearances, a SB win, a few AFCN championships...
I do find it peculiar that many of the same people who think he was hired "because" of the Rooney Rule also have an irrational dislike for him and want him fired. Peculiar2013 MNF Executive Champion!Comment

Rooney Rule arguments ignore all the facts and probably tell us something about the person making them.Comment

Okay, calling a coaches 13th season a "prove it year" might be the dumbest thing I ever heard. They were; that's exactly why he only got a ONE YEAR extension and not more. And you're naive to think a team that implements a race rule isn't going to hire based on race. This opinion is dumb. Rooney rule requires that you INTERVIEW a minority, not HIRE them. They did that. It's funny how the rule is said 'for minorities', but when Tomlin or the Rooneys open their mouths about HC's, they all say "There isn't enough black HC's"
Why is no other minority ever mentioned if they truly mean minorities?
It's also peculiar how some have an irrational love for him.How is it possible to have the best owner, best front office, best gm, best HC, good/great drafts every year and good FA acquisitions every year, but only have 3 playoff wins in 14 years?Comment

it’s because the NFL has a serious problem with hiring Black coaches even though the league is 65% Black. And you're naive to think a team that implements a race rule isn't going to hire based on race.

The tired argument was “if a coach was good enough he would find a way to get hired regardless of race”
but far too often NFL owners had their guy before they even announced they were looking for a new HC.
When you add the amount of white HC’s who were terrible and still got another shot before Black head coaches it pretty much let you know there was a good ole boys club going on.
it’s also been said time and time again Rivera was interviewed and fulfilled the rule because he is Latino.
as far as loving Tomlin. It’s kinda crazy to fathom some Steeler fans will irrationally love a coach or player? Really?
That’s how fandom works. Some love, some hate.. and some do it rationally and irrationally.Steelers 27

He wasnt the main cause, and he got an extension because he is a good coach. After 13 years the Steelers know what Mike Tomlin is about, get over it.Comment
