Cowher wasn't the greatest Coach whoever walked the Earth but...It's the structue and character of their teams...

Did Cowher have his flaws, absolutely...But he always had sound, more than often dominant Defenses, Discipline, structure, an edge and fire that had his team READY to play! Every game!

He wasn't into, look at me, Ass grabbing, group dancing after 15 yard runs, when your D already sucks...Didn't have 3 of the best players at their respective positions of QB, RB, and WR for the majority of his career...

Created a environment where players slept in meetings, came/ come late to meetings/ practices, If they do come...Cowher wasn't close to this...

If Tomlin had Cowhers demeanor, discipline...With the talent Tomlin had...I think we are looking at, at least 2 more Super Bowls imo...

This is my opinion, I will stand by it...Tomlin has NO discipline, NONE! And HIS Boss turns a blind eye to it...Do you think it's magically gonna change now? After all these years? I don't!

I wish we would have moved on from Tomlin this year...Tomlins was good, But his time has come to an end...Need a new voice...We are going to continue to spin our tires...That is my opinion

it will be interesting to see if Tomlin gets his contract extended after this season, this could be the make or break year for him...

But why does anybody think that Art II will change the family way? Unless Tomlin decides he's done or he has a few losing seasons, the bet is that he's here to stay.

unfortunately, i think you are correct
rooney appears to be fine with underachieving and almost making the playoffs.
he is obviously in denial of the drama that this organization has.
we have been talked about/laughed at for months now by numerous, numerous sources, yet he wants to believe nothing is wrong
ill be here next year too to say. 'i told you so' to the tomlin fanboys

well, you do have the odds on your side as the Steelers only have a 1 out of 32 chance of winning the Super Bowl.

Cowhers teams ALWAYS had sound defenses?
Last Cowher defense was 11th in points and 9th in yards allowed.
Tomlin took those SAME GUYS (yes, "Cowhers players") LOST Joey Porter and went to number 2 in year one and number one in his second year in scoring defense.

Cowher could no longer effectively coach either Ben who was disrespecting him nor Ike, who he gave up on and was a scrub on the bench before Tomlin.

I believe Cowher saw this team as a team on the decline.......one he could no longer effectively coach.

The idea that Cowher would make the difference is simply unprovable speculation.

Frankly, I agree it is "possible" Tomlin is in that same position now.

As Bill Parcells used to say......once your message gets old.......its time for a change.

We will see. I'll say this.......if we dont make another playoff change will happen.

In view of the fact that Mike Tomlin has matched Cowhers record I give him the designation:

              TCFCLTC-
The Coach Formerly Considered Less Than Cowher

If he losses confidence in Tomlin, he will be gone
He just believes Tomlin will get us back there.
I think he rights the ship too.

If we make the playoffs, and Rooney keeps Tomlin, we will then be emulating the Dolphins in totality when Shula was being kept around there 20 years after the fact when he won Super Bowls. But I don't see Tomlin righting the ship. He is what he is after 12 years in the league. But a good discussion none the less.

So you think the Steelers should have gone to at least 5 SBs in 13 years.

I wonder how many teams have had that kind of success over that long a time period in the salary cap era.

                        My guess is 1.

                          For your reference:

                          - 16 different teams have appeared in a SB in the last 15 years (maximum number here would be 30). This is an even longer time period than what you're talking about.

                          - If 16 made the SB, that means that half the teams in the league haven't even made a SB in a longer time span that we're talking about.

                          Teams ranked by appearances:
                          - NE (7)
                          - Pit (3)
                          - Sea (3)
                          - Phi (2)
                          - Indy (2)
                          - NYG (2)
                          - Den (2)
                          - Chi (1)
                          - Ari (1)
                          - NO (1)
                          - GB (1)
                          - Bal (1)
                          - SF (1)
                          - Car (1)
                          - Atl (1)
                          - LA (1)

If the argument is that we should have made more SBs because we have a great QB, how do you explain GB and NO?

I think both of those teams have better QBs than Ben, but we have 3x the number of appearances they do.

Turns out that making and winning SBs is actually pretty hard. You have to be very good and you have to be lucky in the single elimination tournament against the other lucky teams.

Or you have to be NE, who probably have the best coach and QB of all time AND they got caught cheating a few times in this stretch.

I also don't understand why you'd have such strong belief that Cowher would have made 4 SBs over the 11 years Tomlin's been coaching when he only made 2 SBs in his actual 15 years at the helm.

And if you believe that, I don't understand why you wouldn't also believe that Tomlin could also double his SB appearances in the next decade or so.

                              My guess is 1.

did you predict a super bowl appearance before the season started the last few years?
how about after winning the first one and the losing to GB a couple years later. did you think we had a chance to go those years in between and right after?
steelers = 3 ring circus with tomlin being the head clown

I think there were lots of years where I thought we were competitive.

But predicting to make the SB or win the SB is silly IMO. There's too much randomness involved. Ask the Saints

And sadly, I won't believe we can beat the Pat's in the playoffs until we do it.
