My opinion is that his experience makes him the better QB (for now).

I think Rudolph has a higher ceiling and Dobbs probably projects to be a similar guy as Jones. Maybe the best versions of both of those guys is better than Jones. But I don't think they're better than he is now (although I will trust the call the team makes because they see them all play every day).

Landry Jones doesn’t turn the football over?

        Huh???? 8TD’s, 7 INT’s in his career.

I watched him throw 2 INT’s vs Carolina in the preseason his first year on 2 consecutive drives.. one was a pick 6.

I’m not worried about stat lines in preseason as much as progress being made.

I think Dobbs is ahead of Landry when comparing them in their second year. He throws a much better ball and his mobility makes him a better threat to move the chains.

Not sure how anyone sees scrub when they see Dobbs but I think they call that hyperbole.

I think we have enough talent that either of these guys could play a safe game and maybe get a W. Let’s not act like Landry has a bunch of impressive wins as a starter.

You watched Dobbs throw 2 Ints in one game in his first season (Jones ended up with a 3rd pick in that year 1 PS game against CAR).

My point was that Jones' experience means that he improved from being a turnover machine (as in the example you posted) to be a competent back up.

I think that Dobbs may end up being better than Jones at his peak, but he's not better than Jones now (neither is Rudolph). I think he'll end up being the same kind of guy: a career backup that can be relied upon in spot duty. That's not "a scrub". He may be better than Jones was in year 2 (not really enough data right now), but he's not competing against year 2 Jones. I agree that Jones was not good in year 2, but he wasn't competing against an entrenched backup and a guy that was hyped as a 1st round player. If Dobbs was the vet in this case, I'd keep him and let Jones walk.

I think that Jones is in the top half of backup QBs right now (or at least close to) . I don't think Dobbs or Rudolph can say that now.

Dobbs has 4 Ints in 77 passes in pre-season games. Jones threw 3 picks in 1 game in his first preseason. He threw one pick in the PS in year 2. He's not a great QB (he'll always be a backup).

It's not fair to judge too much based on last week'd game. I loved the TD pass, but I am not a fan of the pick. I think he'll get better with more experience, but he might not really have that chance this year (I wonder if any team kept 4 on the roster + Practice Squad).

Rudolph fumbled the ball twice in half a game. My understanding is that small hands was one of the knocks on him in the draft. Not a great start, but I hope he gets better too.

There is no reason not to make these guys earn their spots (Rudolph at #2 and Dobbs on the roster / PS). Since he doesn't cost much, I think they need to be better than Jones to push him off the roster. I don't think they have shown that (yet)

I think that the QB chart this year is probably

          Ben
          Jones
          Rudolph
          Dobbs (PS)

I think it's fine if Dobbs gets picked off the PS (or if we let him walk). I think that he's not going to be a starter in the NFL and Rudolph will likely be the backup after this year (maybe even the heir apparent). This is more about the depth at the position rather than about Dobbs being "a scrub". I don't think we needed to draft a QB because Ben / Jones / Dobbs would have been fine. But, Rudolph fell into our laps.

If we didn't draft Rudolph, I'd be happy to have Dobbs on the team because I think he'll end up being a Jones type guy. A QB who won't be the starter, but a guy you can trust in spot duty.

The Rams have nothing behind Geoff; if Jones were the odd man out, that’s where I’d try to move him

On this we agree. I just don’t see Jones having the value as a back as he could in a trade.

The gap gap between him and Dobbs/MR is minimal. I think we could lose or win a game or 2 with either of these guys

I think that this would be a best case scenario.

Rudolph or Dobbs show the staff that they are better than Jones.

Trade Jones (even for a low round pick).

But, I think that the FO is generally pretty conservative. I think they'll keep Jones unless one of the other guys has a stellar pre-season. With one game in the books, I think neither looked very "stellar". But, there's another game this week for them to prove themselves.

Jones is not playing against the Packers which leads me to believe that he isn't competing for his job.

                    he never was

the steelers know what Dobbs is and that's not a very good NFL QB as hard as it is for some here to see

his tenure here was over here the second Mason Rudolph was drafted

I agree, but for those who were touting the competition it serves as evidence that there is none.

There may not be a competition...but, perhaps there should be...

Speaking Tuesday, Steelers coach Mike Tomlin admitted Landry Jones' roster spot is not secure.

"We'll see where the road ends," Tomlin said. Jones has been Ben Roethlisberger's primary backup since 2015, but the team almost certainly views rookie third-rounder Mason Rudolph as an upgrade. Few teams keep three quarterbacks these days. Jones' time in Pittsburgh is likely numbered.

There is no competition with Jones because the Steelers already know what they have with him. It's Dobbs and Rudolph that need PT for the Steelers to figure out how close they come to Jones. They will keep Jones and shop Dobbs if he falls short.

The overpaid lumberjack looked like.... well, an overpaid lumberjack. Boy, am I glad we addressed the ILB position adequately. Bostic didn't show much better.

Let's hope Matthew Thomas somehow pulls a miracle and becomes a decent starter.

I think that may happen with Thomas. The problem is... it may happen after the "Window" has closed for Big Ben, Bell, etc.
