What I see in Josh Dobb's tape

I just don't understand why some here are so upset with Dobbs, and who say he will be nothing, or has accuracy issues, ect. I mean really, no matter what ANY college QB's stats were, that has never been a Guarantee of NFL success. I can name plenty of past NFL QB's who had way worse stats, especially when it came to completion percentages,,,like Marino, Favre and so on. But then I have had some tell me that those guys had great Intangables..( Whatever )...or way way way stronger Arms then Dobbs has ( Actually they didn't )...well maybe Favre did


But, if you want another example, one in the last 10 years, and one who IS a current NFL QB. Try going back to the 2008 Draft...who was the very FIRST QB drafted ( 3rd overall ) ? That was " Matt Ryan "


And, can someone please tell me ANYTHING Matt Ryan either did better or more EFFICIENTLY in college, or what Physical trait he had that was better then Josh Dobbs ?....please...anything. And yet he was anointed the BEST QB in a Draft ( And top-5 pick )..while Dobbs is a Freaky looking WASTE of a 4th round pick. Can anyone tell me that please.

The question will be how Dobbs learns to run a pro style offense (apparently, he did well in the Senior Bowl, but that's one game) and his learning curve to read defenses in the NFL. Physically, I do see comparisons between Dobbs and Kordell, Cam, Dak, RGIII, etc.

But, is he mentally going to be able to grasp the pro style game and read defenses? Matt Patricia, the DC for the Pats*, has been able to apply the same skills he developed with an aeronautical engineering degree to being a highly successful defensive coordinator...

Will Dobbs be able to apply his intelligence (aerospace engineering degree) in a similar manner? I hope so, because he has the physical tools of an NFL QB, IMO...

I am generally against drafting developmental QBs. I think that it's better to pick guys off the scrap heap than use draft picks.

But, hopefully Dobbs' ability to work through a difficult major means that he's coachable. If he can be coached to look downfield after he breaks the pocket, maybe he can be a bit more Ben (remember when Hines said that he loved that Ben was always looked to throw after breaking the pocket unlike 10). But, it's also nice to have a guy with some athleticism too. Especially if he has to come in as a back up.

If Ben goes down, maybe we run Dobbs like we ran Ben in his first year. You get 1, maybe 2 reads. If nothing's there for sure, the play's broken. Ben would use those broken plays to buy time and complete big passes...maybe Dobbs can do that (there is some of those plays in the highlights posted), or maybe he turns them into 5-15 yard runs. A situation like that might be better than playing Jones, who seems fairly likely to throw it to the other team.

Do you actually watch games? Matt Ryan was a beast at BC. Better passing, better decision making, better at reading defenses, better in the clutch.

You just pull NFL stars names out of a hat and compare them to drafted players with no rhyme or reason.

I don't see Kordell at all... I see Cam Newton tho. I see him extended plays, moving the chains with his feet and making some big throws since he has a strong arm. I also see him making some terrible passes like Cam. One area I think he is better, well more like 2. I think he is smarter than Cam and I think he has more touch on his short passes.

Ryan is the darndest QB.
I watched the 4th quarter of a football game -- came away thinking, "#1 overall draft pick".
A coworker also watched the first half of the same football game and came away thinking, "I'm not sure why this guy is even a draft selection at all".

It was their big comeback game against VaTech.

What I saw in that 4th quarter (precision, leadership, toughness), I've NEVER seen from Dobbs to THAT extent. That's the difference for me. Ryan is a bad example. You chose a guy who had an extended period of ELITE QB and you got a sense that this could be a constant with the right coaching.

That was the game that made me a believer. That last TD when he rolled right and then threw a 40 yard pass to the left corner of the endzone? Amazing.

Also have to realize BC didn't have much talent around him vs Dobbs who is surrounded by talent (except for that crappy OL).

I like Dobbs and I'm a huge Vols fan. I went there my freshman year. Dobbs made some clutch throws and they won a few games they had no business winning due to Dobbs making some clutch plays. He is an amazing athlete and I'm hoping with a good OL and coaching he can make al the throws at the next level and have a good career as a Steeler or have some value for draft picks down the road. I think he could be our Dak Prescott but people need to remember it's a marathon not a sprint. Dak had a great rookie season but now that we have tape he has to show he can do it again.
