      Brown: 'I love the potential'
      Posted 15 hours ago

With camp ending, Antonio Brown gives his take on a teammate who has stood out.

LATROBE, Pa. – For the past three weeks they have sweated it out on the practice fields together, sat in meetings with each other, and lived, ate, and breathed football as a unit.

But training camp at Saint Vincent College has come to an end for the most part, and receiver Antonio Brown likes what the offense has accomplished.

“I think we have taken some great strides,” said Brown. “We still have a long way to go until the regular season starts. But for the most part we took some positive steps.”

Brown would like to see some of the team’s young receivers step up to make a name for themselves over the next three preseason games, but there is one he has been very impressed with, Sammie Coates.

“I love the potential that he has,” said Brown. “He is a playmaker. He can do it all as far as the wide receiver position. He can run after the catch. He has big catch radius. He has a lot of potential. It’s up to him to go out there and unlock it and I think he will.”

While Brown said Coates can do it all, he clearly could be referring to himself with that description, and well actually has. Brown made a nice over the shoulder sideline catch in practice on Monday and walking back to the huddle was vocal saying, “I can do it all.”

“You have to be accountable to do it all,” said Brown. “You have to have versatility. You have to be able to go inside and outside. You have to have a big catch radius.”

You also have to be willing to work your tail off to get to the point where you can do it all. And Brown certainly does that.

Hall of Fame wide receiver James Lofton was talking about Brown during enshrinement weekend, and recalled watching him last year in the Hall of Fame game. While Brown didn’t play in the game, Lofton noticed him every timeout throughout the game running sprints on the sidelines. It’s something he did again last week when he didn’t play against the Lions.

Brown ran 10 100-yard gassers with his pads on along with William Gay.

“I always want to prepare even though I am not out there getting the reps,” said Brown. “I always want my body to be ready to go when it’s time to go. In a couple of weeks I am going to take all of the reps so I want to continue to keep my body ready, in condition even when I am not playing. I need to continue to keep my wind up and energy up. I want to be ready when it’s time to go.”

Steeler teams featuring stat-driven, me-first, fantasy-football-darling diva types such as Antonio Brown & Le'Veon Bell won no championships.

Super Bowl winning Steeler teams were built around a dynamic, in-your-face defense plus blue-collar, hard-hitting, no-nonsense football players on offense such as Hines Ward & Jerome Bettis.

We don't want Juju & Conner to replace what we lost in Brown & Bell.

We are counting on Juju & Conner to return us to the glory we once had with Hines & The Bus.

This offense will sorely miss the dimension Bryant added... and without Ladarius Green to help "stretch the field", as well... it may not be the powerhouse many were expecting.

Green may not stretch the field but he widens the sidelines

I always found the idea that Coates has Bryant level talent silly.

I really think Bryant has 1st team Allpro level ability if he just gets his head on straight.
I think he has every bit of "talent" Brown has EVEN Browns ridiculous quickness, and cutting ability, just bigger and faster.
He actually runs more like Brown does than LONG receivers typically do.
He just has never honed his talent.
If you transplanted Browns brain into Bryants body dude would end up GOAT at the position EASY.

In view of the fact that Mike Tomlin has matched Cowhers record I give him the designation:

                  I think that's pushing it a bit.
Bryan would have to work on his hands and learn how to fight for the ball to be considered 1st team all pro. That said he's a tremendous #2. Especially when teams have to worry about AB. On the other side

Coated may not have that talent level but I don't think he that far behind. He played really well in that playoff game where we were without AB,bell, and dwil
Both he and as you mentioned Bryan look dangerous in the open field. I think with Sammy build, he might be tougher to bring down as well

Like I read somewhere (I believe yahoo sports?) that Coates could form in the mold of Cordarelle Patterson..just needs a better quarterback to become that, potentially (Ben Roethlisberger...not Landry Jones)

I think you miss my point. Catching is a "skill". I am talking "talent". Brown crushes Bryant in terms of skills, not just hands but route running too. But skills can be improved.
I repeat, Put Browns mind into Bryant's skull and dude would be be unstoppable.

Brown's unstoppable anyways. Bryant's got a long ways to go honestly before we can have this type of discussion.

                          Unstoppable?
A corner can "stop" Brown on a deep fly route TODAY easier than one run by Bryant.
But admittedly that is only one aspect of the game.

We can have this discussion because the topic is NOT that Bryant IS as good as Brown is overall or will ever be.

My point is about natural abilities.

Bryant is more than just "fast" and tall. He has that shifty elusiveness you usually see only in small guys. This is the same "natural" strength that Brown has in spades. Most of Browns success is due to elite "skills" based on hard work. But that quick shifty elusiveness is the one "natural talent" that Brown has at an elite level. Bryant has THAT gift has well as superior speed and size. Bryant just has nowhere near the honed "skills" of Brown.

Back to the topic here, Coates is Big and fast too. He IS stronger. But too often people see Bryant as just about speed.

My entire reason for bringing Brown up in this discussion was to highlight a common natural talent they share that Coates, Wallace, or any number of blazing fast guys lack.

I hate that comparison because Cordarelle Patterson flat out sucks. He played in all 16 games last season and had a grand total of 2 catches for 10 yards and 2 rushes for 15 yards. Plus he lost a fumble. He's basically just a kick returner now, and the NFL seems to be continuously attempting to legislate that aspect of special teams out of the game.
