Well if they sign Tate, it better be with the understanding that he is the BACKUP. Im not familiar with his personality so not sure if he would pull a Blount and fly the coop when things dont go his way. For this reason, Im thinking a younger player trying to make his mark would be more satisfied with the role and thus integrate better with the team chemistry. IMO, RBs take the least time to acclimate to the NFL but burn out the fastest. Again, this indicates get a rookie.

I disagree that it would be a wasted pick in the next 3-4 years. The NFL requires, no, it mandates that you have a quarterback that is well above the line to compete week-in and week-out if you expect to win games. Now is the time to get a quarterback that you believe can be that quarterback after Ben, let him sit and learn and then hopefully, the investment pays off when you need him to take over for Ben. Rarely, does drafting a quarterback and inserting him as the starter work out in the NFL, the learning curve is steep and one of two things needs to happen for that to work:
1) The quarterback is Dan Marino, Andrew Luck ready when they come out of college or
2) He's good, but the team is really good around him and that allows for mistakes (see Ben Roethlisberger, Russell Wilson, Colin Kaepernik).
I would have no problem with the Steelers drafting a QB that they believe that guy right now or continue to develop Jones, either way, I believe now is the time to start thinking about it; Ben's skills could evaporate quickly, he's taken a pounding, he never curled up in the fetal position to avoid contact and that could catch up with him at any moment.

Missing more time? Hell, I think he will miss less games to end his career because he has the ultimate dump off weapon in Bell. The Steelers don't need a #2, they need a #2 who can be a #1. Landry doesn't have it. The Steelers will need to invest in a guy they can groom for a few seasons. Trust me on this, Ben is 32 going on 40. He has taken so many hits. He will be missing more and more time. I think he is done by 36. The Steelers need to take a look at real options. Well that is unless they want to field a team with Tomzak and Grahams at the QB position.
Ben has taken some monster hits but he is a monster of a QB.Steelers 27

He is getting older and has taken more hits than any QB should take. He played the last part of season in pain. You seen some of that on the field. Yes, I believe we need a guy able to step in and win games...not Grad...not Landry.Trolls are people too.Comment

besides brady, name a late round qb that sat and learned for years behind the starter and became a 'well above the line" player?I disagree that it would be a wasted pick in the next 3-4 years. The guys who were drafted (early or late) and sat and became stars is a very tiny list: Palmer sat for a year, Rivers sat behind Brees until the San Diego let Brees walk, and Rodgers sat three years behind Farve. Other than that, it appears you either have it - Ben, Luck, Ryan or you don't - a huge list of failure, that doesn't appear to be determined by whether they started right away or not.
Landry is a wasted roster spot. Hasn't dressed in 2 seasons and looks overwhelmed in pre-season games. Time to move on. If this year doesn't look as if it has a strong QB class, then wait, go with Grad for another year or two or pick up a FA you think is viable, and look to draft in the future. So far the Steelers late round QB drafting has been a giant box of suck: Jones, Dixon, Jacobs, Martin (could have had Brady).sigpicComment

Not quite time to move on from Jones. He will certainly get one more opportunity to show he has what it takes in training camp.sigpic

its an interesting discussion.
im with squid on this one. this pipedream of drafting some developmental QB and him magically being able to step in and play at a championship level when Ben retires is foolish.
eddies QB plan goes like this: ride Ben til his body breaks down. have a veteran back up that has game experience and can step in for a 2-4 games if needed. after that forget it. 3rd string? who cares, your team isnt winning anything at that point anyways. maybe pluck someones practice squad at the end of the year if its someone you liked coming out.
then look for your next #1 high in the draft. in our case, 3-4 years from nowComment
