Tomlin: 4 things you must know vs. Panthers

    Teresa Varley
    Steelers.com

Feeling the pain: Quarterback Ben Roethlisberger said on his weekly radio show Tuesday that he is still “very sore” from the hit delivered by Ravens’ linebacker Courtney Upshaw, which drew a 15-yard roughing the passer call. Coach Mike Tomlin isn’t surprised by the fact that Roethlisberger was still feeling pain.

“I’m sure he was,” said Tomlin. “That was a significant shot. It comes with the territory and that is something he has embraced over the years.”

Tomlin said the hit didn’t have an effect on Roethlisberger’s performance the rest of the game, which included him missing some open receivers and it not being one of his better performances.

“He is not going to make excuses and I am not either,” said Tomlin. “He is capable of playing better and we look forward to working hard so it occurs this weekend.”

Tackling the tackling issue: Missed tackles plagued the Steelers in the team’s 26-6 loss against the Ravens, but it’s something that they continue to work on in practice, even if they aren’t actually tackling. Instead of it being about the hitting, it’s about working the scheme and the approach to tackling.

“Often times is about a plan or an approach and having a hard-core plan and recognizing the positions that your position puts you in, the manner which you approach the ball from a variety of positions on the field and having a plan to execute fundamental tackling accordingly,” said Tomlin. “I think the more that you play, the more you are in positions on footballs and you are approaching the ball inside out, you learn to maintain that consistency, or you learn to chew up the free grass associated with a guy who has to cover great distances. All of those things can be done in a practice setting without actually tackling, and we have been emphasizing that. We’ll continue and we’ll expect the tackling to improve because of it.

“It’s just about improving on a day to day basis and some fundamental things individually and collectively.”

Too early to judge: After two games the Steelers are averaging 10 penalties per game, nine against the Ravens and 11 in the opener against the Browns. Last year the Steelers averaged five penalties per game, and Tomlin thinks it’s early to be judging how the average will play out by season’s end.

“We are two games into this one,” said Tomlin. “Hopefully by the time we are able to compare this year to last or any year over a 16, 19, 20 game schedule we will have a better showing than we have to this point.”

Ready to rebound: There are going to be good days and bad days for players, and the Ravens game wasn’t a good one for tackle Marcus Gilbert. Gilbert allowed two sacks, but Tomlin said it wasn’t necessarily something he did wrong, but rather the play of Ravens linebacker Elvis Dumervil that helped lead to the issues.

“You play 60 plus snaps and you give up two sacks, it’s a bad game,” said Tomlin. “It is what it is. That’s the nature of our business and I am sure as a tackle that is a challenge he embraces. A lot of it was Dumervil related, who is a pretty good player and has been for a long period of time. You are talking about guys like Marcus who has to rebound, but you have to acknowledge they play some pretty stiff challenges week in and week out.

“I am not concerned about Marcus and his ability to rebound from that and his mentality in regards to that. I expect him to come fighting back like Rocky.”

Don't sign Worilds to a long term deal and cut Timmons. We won't see much (if any at all) of a drop off with Vince Williams or Spence at ILB.

That will free up plenty of money next year to sign Big Ben and sign a good veteran CB.

Anyone who didn't cost 9.7 million for one year. Moats or another FA body.

No way was he worth 9.7... we could have picked up 2 OLB's and an extra DB for 9.7.

I like your first post but dumping Timmons at this point is a non-option. He has shown too much good history to suddenly say he sucks after two games. I offer this, when the defensive unit is playing badly, even the stars are not going to look good. They will whip it into shape after a few more games, sucks we are slow starters.

Apparently Timmons is not allowed to make any mistakes learning his new position.

Maybe can lay part of the blame on the new CBA not allowing as much contact in OTAs and training camp. Tough for the new guys to learn how to tackle when they are doing it against shadows.

What was Seattle fined for in 2012 and this season during OTA's? Excessive contact...

Seattle is willing to pay fines in order to make sure they know how to tackle

2 games? What are you talking about? This isn't Shazier we're talking about. This is a guy I've watched play every single game of his professional career which happens to be 7 years...

Contrary to popular belief around here, he can't blanket TEs. That's been proven time and time again if you watch the games. Over the years, he's gotten much better against the run but still isn't anything to brag about. Splash plays? What splash plays? He's not worth 12 million. If we want a guy that will struggle against TEs and is better in run defense then start Vince Williams and save yourself 11 million dollars. That's not an agenda. That's common sense.

I don't like the "no contact" rules but I find it strange how other coaches have figured things out and we think it's rocket science.

After reading all the comments on this thread seems like they blend together and add up to...... We are not drafting guys that are making an impact, we are not developing guys to make an impact. No one has yet said as far as I read, this player is great, this player is getting their end of the job done. Where are all the Himes Wards, Chris Hokes, Aaron Smiths, Brett Kiesels to name a few ? Then the guys we did get in free agency like Ryan Clark, James Farrior to name a couple. Someone or some part of the organization has not been doing their homework for several seasons.

That's where your perceptions are probably wrong. Teams that are not struggling with tackling are mostly veteran defenses. Seattle has no rookies on their starting defense.

It's not rocket science, but it does take learning the strength and technique required to make a tackle in the NFL vs college.

Big freakin' deal. He's a 7 year vet making close to 12 mil for god sake. He's still playing the ILB. What.. you want to give him another 3-4 years to learn Buck like it took him to move from OLB to Mack? Maybe by the time he retires, he'll finally get it. Man, expectations are low... even the fans are finding endless excuses for players.

Tackling technique is basic fundamental football.

Maybe its partly the result of new rules that force the defenders to contort themselves at the last minute in order to hit the approved tackling zone. I imagine missed tackles are up all across the NFL
