Jones: ‘I want to put everything into this team’

Second-year player takes advantage of workouts.

Second year player Jarvis Jones is taking part in his first full offseason program with the Steelers, which began on Tuesday, April 22, with Phase One of the program.

Jones is taking advantage of every minute of the program to make sure he is more than ready for the 2014 season.

Jones shared his thoughts on a variety of subjects, including the importance of working out.

On what it was like to have time off after the season: “I don’t think there is much of an offseason. There is a little time away from football, but you prep your body and learn how to take care of it. You get motivated to go into the season.”

On having defensive assistant Joey Porter now as a point of reference: “He was one of the best to ever play the game. I am glad to have Joey here. I know he is glad to be back with us. We are going to take full advantage of it and learn everything from him.”

On having the full offseason program to take advantage of: “We are a year older now so we understand the game more and what our coaches expect of us. We understand where we want to be and what we want to do as far as our careers. We have high expectations. We are going to try to learn everything we can and take the experiences from last year and this offseason and go full throttle.”

I hope that was an old pic. I am 5 foot 6 150 soaking wet and my arms look as big as his. I was wanting to see a monstor...kinda like the poundage Timmons put on.
      Trolls are people too.

I fear he still looks that way which is why I don't think he will ever be able to consistently beat Left Tackles in this league. He is neither strong or fast.

Ovi you're veering dangerously close to becoming what you've hated most.

Remember the Timmons bashers that continued to pound the drum against him because they wanted to draft Posluszny instead? It's clear how bad you wanted Eifert last year instead of Jones. Maybe give the guy a chance as a second year player (who can react instead of think)?

Jones doesn't need me to have a chance because the organization has no choice. I hope he is a star because if he isn't our defense will continue to languish and get worse like it has the past 3-4 years. The fact remains is that Jones was one of the slowest LBs coming into the draft last year. That showed on the field last year. We can wait for him to react and not think but that won't make him faster.

Not sure I agree with you regarding his speed. I saw hesitation on the field at times last year but not a "slow" player at all. Personally I think it's a self-fulfilling prophecy in some people's eyes. If he had the exact same season as he had last year, but had run a faster 40 time at his pro-day, no one would be saying he's too slow.

I absolutely think he needs to add strength (as does nearly every rookie EVER), but I do not think speed is an issue with him.

It has been said before many times:

"If your OLB is running 40 yards on a given play, something is terribly wrong..."
Actually, my post was NOT about you...but, if the shoe fits, feel free to lace that &!+€# up and wear it.

I've always been naturally strong, and have always had a really good bench press (I was repping 345 before I got hit by a semi truck). If you look at me, you'd never guess it. And on the other hand, I see guys that look jacked, but can't bench press to save their lives. They use light weight and a ton of reps, but couldn't get 225 up once.

Dang, Shawn, I was thinking the same thing. His arms look pathetic. Those are weak arms even for a CB. OLB? Crazy small and lacking definition at the same time. Bad combo.

What's he got on that bar...45 pound bar, 55 pounds each side. I work out with that...its exactly what I bench with.

Hey, cut the guy a break we know we drafted him weak and beside you forgot about the collars on the bar, that is another 5lbs so he is really dealing

Is he actually benching? He looks awfully low to the ground to be using the bench. Perhaps he's doing something else.

I don't know, James Harrison ran 99 yards in the Super Bowl and that was a terribly good play!

Didn't Tebow get sacked once in which he kept trying to scramble backwards and ended up losing like 30 yards or so on just that one play?
Steeler teams featuring stat-driven, me-first, fantasy-football-darling diva types such as Antonio Brown & Le'Veon Bell won no championships.

Super Bowl winning Steeler teams were built around a dynamic, in-your-face defense plus blue-collar, hard-hitting, no-nonsense football players on offense such as Hines Ward & Jerome Bettis.

We don't want Juju & Conner to replace what we lost in Brown & Bell.

We are counting on Juju & Conner to return us to the glory we once had with Hines & The Bus.
