Expect to see us pick up someone either off the PS (Al Woods or McLendon) or a veteran. Perhaps Sunny Harris is still out there or this is Doug Worthington's ticket back onto the team via the PS.

Sorry to say that Smith is done. As good as he has been and as good a guy as he is the Steelers would be throwing $4+M away if they kept him next year. No reason to think there would not be a very high probability he gets hurt again. Need to get some young bodies on the DL

What about as the backup? He may not be able to hold up over 16 games, but he'd be awesome to have as the backup and emergency DE, IMO. He may also get an extra year to recuperate if there is a lockout and that would put him at 36, perfect age to be the veteran backup to fill in and provide leadership as well.

I don't know how some can question the value of AS to this team. Did they not watch the game? With AS in the fins got nothing on the ground. With him out Ricky Williams started gouging them for at least 4 yards a carry.

Now I'm not saying this is a catastrophic development to the team but it is significant and we certainly have to figure out a way to handle it better than we have in the past.

We definitely have to start restocking the D-line. We had to whether AS got hurt or not but now it is more urgent because I'm not sure Smith recovers from this one. It takes a lot of mental toughness to rehab severe injuries and as pointed out by many Smith has had to do it 2 out of the last 3 years. This will make it 3 out of 4 and at his age you have to wonder if he feels it is worth the effort.

I love how he plays and hope we haven't seen the last of him but it wouldn't surprise me at all if we have.

You might be able to call it catastrophic. In the least, it is very significant. After Ben and Troy, Aaron Smith may be the most important Steeler. Losing any of those three for the season, seriously weakens this team and dampens their shot at another title.

On the positive side, we will get to see what Hood can do with an extended look. He'll get a chance to grow and learn as he plays. Hopefully, we can continue to win and he'll be much improved by the time we get to the playoffs.
Even if Bill Belichick was getting an atomic wedgie, his face would look exactly the same.

You obviously missed the point. No one is questioning Smith's value to this team. I dont know a Steeler fan who doesn't believe when healthy Smith is the best 3-4 DE in the game. However the issue is what value he has been to the Steelers the past two seasons.

And it is a fact----two seasons---21 games missed. That isnt very good value. Sorry.

And that isnt something that can be questioned.

If he would take a pay cut to play then no issue but not at his current contract value.

I think Dee Dub hit the nail on the head... he has missed way too many games to talk about his value to the team.

I think it's too early to look at a RB's production without AS in the game. If they ran on us and won I could see your point but RW had 3 to 4 runs of 4 to 5 yards and that was it for the rest of the game.

I know AS means a lot to the team and when healthy he is a beast but unfortunately it's "when he is healthy"

Take a deep breath and repeat after me.

                      The Steelers will be ok.

Smith is a loss but we will indeed recover.

I agree but you realistically have to have an elevated level of anxiety with Smith's injury because both Kiesel and Hood are already less than 100%. If they were 100% I'd be OK but we are way thin on the DL right now.

                          Re: Smith: Torn Triceps muscle

I really think that Smith was good this year but not quite the 3-4 DE end great that he had been. The years and the injuries had taken their toll. And I am not at all surprised that he was overtaken by another severe injury. Once one thing goes, the rest of the system is weakened and it takes less to reinjure.

Smith gets my praise for an outstanding career but I hope he knows he doesn't own anyone any drastic measures to try to come back. He should go on and retire and enjoy the rest of his life before he permanently winds up crippled.

The only problem is the Steelers don't have many really healthy lineman. I think Hood will be good eventually, if not a really flashy player but he has ankle problems. Hampton did have a hamstring injury earlier. Eason almost died in the offseason. Keisel is healing. McLendon was somewhat impressive in an earlier stint. They need a healthy body. I hope he can perform.

I hear ya O. I am a bit concerned that we are dinged up but this team is legit. We have talent on both sides of the ball that will pick up the slack. We have a good D system and I think we will be just fine.

Aaron Smith Reportedly Done For Year, Diminishing Steelers Super Bowl Hopes?

Posted on October 24, 2010 by ted

The Steelers won a tough battle in a hard-fought and fortunate, 23-22, win at Miami on Sunday. But they may well have lost the war of the 2010 season.

Aaron Smith, the Steelers’ best defensive lineman and arguably the NFL’s top 3-4 defensive end over the past decade, left the game early in the second half with what is believed to be a torn triceps. The injury will likely end his season, per the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

This will mark the third time in the last four years that the now-34-year-old Smith suffered a career-ending injury during the season. In the other two seasons (2007, 2009), the normally stout Pittsburgh defense was nowhere near as formidable without Smith and essentially collapsed down the stretch of both seasons.

In between, Smith stayed healthy for the 2008 season, earning a Pro Bowl selection and winning a second Super Bowl title with the Steelers. His play thus far this fall was similar to much of his career when healthy.

The Steelers will now likely move reserve Ziggy Hood into a starting role at LDE. Hood, however, has been bothered by a sprained ankle this fall and has yet to really flash the ability in games that made him the Steelers’ first-round pick in 2009. Pittsburgh desperately needs a quick return to health by veteran starting RDE Brett Keisel, who missed today’s Miami game with a pulled hamstring.

The Pittsburgh defensive line provided almost no pass rush and was not as strong against the run with Hood and journeyman reserve Nick Eason at end today throughout much of the second half. Players behind them engender even less confidence.

Second-year player Steve McLendon has been going back and forth between the active roster and practice squad this fall. Expect him to now be signed to the active roster for the rest of the season as soon as Smith is placed on injured reserve.

If Keisel is not back for the Sunday night showdown at New Orleans next week, Pittsburgh may also need to sign former LSU star Al Woods off its practice squad just to have a two-deep roster on the defensive line, because the team only kept six on its original 53-man roster, with five of those players over 30.

Pittsburgh then would have to temporarily release a player from another position (likely QB Charlie Batch or QB Byron Leftwich) to make room on the roster for Woods for a game or two before resigning the released quarterback.

Regardless of any roster moves, expect reserve nose tackle Chris Hoke to also start receiving more game reps at defensive end as well. In some seasons, Hoke has not played any defensive end. However, he has already seen a few reps on the outside this season and will now likely have to cross-train at NT and DE, where the Steelers’ depth will lack experience and talent.

Smith is signed through 2011 and the Steelers would likely welcome him back next season, but it may have to be as a part-time player and at a lower salary. However, he may just decide to retire, thus ending a fine career. Even if Smith returns next fall, the Steelers can no longer depend on him playing 16 games.
