Mocking the Draft’s live 7-round mock draft is complete, and the Steelers mock GM, Adam Baliatico, assesses his plunder.
A daring trade back into the first round after selecting Memphis DT Dontari Poe was the highlight, and it netted him Alabama LB Dont’a Hightower as well.
Late-round buzz centers around the selection of Arizona QB Nick Foles in the sixth, a solid player who fell probably a bit further than he will in the real draft.
“I have Foles rated as a late 2nd round prospect.” Baliatico said. “So getting him late in the 6th was just too good to be true.”
Outside of those picks, Baliatico went heavy with offensive guards, scooping up Washington’s Senio Kelemete in the fourth round, Pitt’s Luke Nix in the fifth round and Texas Tech’s Lonnie Edwards in the seventh. This mock draft proved what many have been saying; it’s a deep draft for guards.
“Edwards is one of the best pass blocking guards in this draft.” Baliatico said. “(He) has starting potential.”
While obviously this draft will not likely hold true to the actual draft, it does provide some good insight into how the cards could fall in April. Taking three guards may be a bit of a stretch, but picking up a quarterback in the mid-to-late rounds seems plausible, and certainly, no one would be against the Steelers acquiring some depth at the guard spot.
