Personally, I hate giving up Sonny Harris and IMO Roy LEwis outplayed Mundy all preseason (last night's pick 6 notwithstanding)

I was hoping Sonny Harris or McLendon could replace Kirschke. I like Roy Lewis as well...but don't you show him listed on the DB's they kept or is that a different Lewis and I am having a brain fart?

If this is indeed the 53 I am glad to see McDonald make it as I think he could be a very good WR for us to have around. Also glad to see Ratliff make it. I think we definately upgraded in some areas from last years squad...especially in our return game. Amazing what Tomlin has made our special teams into in just 2 years.

Its hard not to smile when you look at the RB's and WR's on paper and see what we have. Hopefully the Oline could gel as we all hope to give BA more play scenarios.

I am happy for Arnold just based on what he went through. I also thought Madison was a special teams phenom but unfortunately one dimensional.

I am shocked by the Isaac Redman cut but who do you cut instead when everyone's value is assesed. Can't argue to much with Tomlin's decision making when you take emotion and gut instincts out of the equation.

That would be Keenan "Ivory" Lewis.

Steeler teams featuring stat-driven, me-first, fantasy-football-darling diva types such as Antonio Brown & Le'Veon Bell won no championships.

Super Bowl winning Steeler teams were built around a dynamic, in-your-face defense plus blue-collar, hard-hitting, no-nonsense football players on offense such as Hines Ward & Jerome Bettis.

We don't want Juju & Conner to replace what we lost in Brown & Bell.

We are counting on Juju & Conner to return us to the glory we once had with Hines & The Bus.

im suprised roy lewis didnt make it and mundy did. besides the carolina game mundy did nothing. is lewis not ps eligible any more? also why did summers make the team and not redman? thats a bad move imo. redman was a lot more impressive than summers. summers was a late draft pick so cutting him wouldnt be a big loss.

I'm thinking that Mundy's positives (game smarts, size) helped him gain the roster spot over Roy Lewis. And Summers may have more role diversity (running, lead blocking, ST's) and had less opportunity to show his upside mid-camp due to injury.
I'm thinking and hoping we have Redman on the PS, as we will need at least one RB (maybe 2) on PS while carrying only 4 on the roster. Don't know if Roy Lewis is PS-eligible, but we are well-stocked in the defensive backfield, should probably carry 1 DB on the PS.

Sorry to see that Bruce Davis was not able to make the cut. He looked dismal on ST's most of the time, far as I could tell. Hope they can PS him and keep developing him to see if the light comes on for him and if he has IT, but I think someone will pick him up.

Would not be surprised if the Browns pick up one or two of our cuts. They need help.

I was wondering about that, too. Maybe Woods' hammy resulted in a "waived-injured" move, or just maybe the the info is not accurate.
I am hoping he is rostered or PS'ed (but is he PS-eligible?).

I thought WOODS adds better depth than Bailey at LB and isn't much of a drop off on Special Teams. but WOODS hurt his hamstring so I'm thinking he'll stick around once he's 100%.

Redman is one dimensional on the goalline ... I thought he looked out of shape and doesn't have great speed. I would love to keep him on the practice squad and develop him b/c I think he can be a good back if he gets in shape.

Roy Lewis and Donovan Bailey should both be practice squad eligible.

Posted this thought elsewhere in a different context... if they're looking for a FS, the "defensive quarterback" part of the job is a pretty big deal, especially in LeBeau's defense. Mundy, as I recall, played an extra year at WVU because he graduated from Michigan before his eligibility expired, allowing him to transfer without following the normal sit out a year rule that applies. Judging from the average SAT's, etc. they don't let just anybody into Michigan in the first place... kinda like graduating from Duke a year early. Wondering if an enhanced "above the neck" part of his game made it so that Mundy just had to do "enough", while Lewis would have had to be "extraordinary", considering that they're staring down the probability now of losing Ryan Clark after the season... just a thought.

I echo the bummer sentiment about B Davis. I was really hoping his development would have accelerated enough for him to at least make the team. Or that he could have been a ST contributor based on his atheleticism alone. It's even more of a bummer considering I would have really preferred we took an OL for grooming with that #3 pick last year. I hate to be cliche but he's looking like his name is actually Bust Davis

People always use the "bust" moniker prematurely when someone isn't All Pro right off the bat, but now is the appropriate time to refer to him as "Bust Davis" because it is 100% true at this point.

The official announcement came from the team, finally:

                              Steelers reduce roster to 53
                              Saturday, September 5, 2009
PITTSBURGH ? The Steelers finalized their regular season roster today by releasing 21 players and placing another on the Reserve/Injured List to reach the NFL-mandated 53-player limit.

The team’s final roster includes three quarterbacks, four running backs, six wide receivers, three tight ends, nine offensive linemen, seven defensive linemen, eight linebackers, 10 defensive backs and three specialists (kicker, punter and long snapper).

The Steelers released the following players to reach their 53-man roster limit: quarterback Mike Reilly; running backs Carey Davis, Isaac Redman and Justin Vincent; wide receivers Dallas Baker, Tyler Grisham and Brandon Williams; tight end Dezmond Sherrod; offensive linemen Jason Capizzi, Jeremy Parquet and A.Q. Shipley; defensive linemen Sonny Harris, Steve McClendon and Scott Paxson; linebackers Bruce Davis, Tom Korte, Andy Schantz and Donovan Woods; defensive backs Roy Lewis and Anthony Madison; and kicker Piotr Czech.

Sixth-year veteran tight end Sean McHugh was placed on the team’s Reserve/Injured List and will miss the entire 2009 season after injuring his knee during training camp.

All NFL teams must trim their rosters to 53 players by 6 p.m. (ET) Saturday, September 5. Clubs may establish a practice squad of up to eight players after noon (ET) Sunday, Sept. 6.

The Steelers will kick off the NFL season at 8:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 10 when they host the Tennessee Titans at Heinz Field.
