    Rod Woodson Tribute (Favorite Plays)

Even though Rod won a superbowl outside of Pittsburgh, it's a shame he was injured during the 1995 season. To come back and actually suit up and contribute in the Superbowl that year is amazing.

MY FAVORITE ROD WOODSON PLAYS of ALL TIME:
#1: 1996-1997 AFC Wild Card game against the Colts: Marshall Faulk caught a short dump off pass and Rod was being blocked by a TE. Faulk cut behind his TE's block (as most RB's should have) and Rod fully engaged by the TE, manhandled the TE and pushed him into FAULK knocking him to the ground. I was at that game and it might have been one of the most amazing spur of the moment tackles in NFL History.

#2: Rod's pass defense in SUPERBOWL XXX against Michael Irvin.

A few stick out for me.

1994- Pick 6 on MNF vs. Buff
1989 WC game vs. Hou- His kamikaze hit and recovery that set up Gary Anderson's 50 yd game winner
1996-Home opener vs. Balt. Coming off the ACL injury, he picked off Vinny Testaverde's 1st pass (I think) and took it to the house

I love the one against the Colts...it was amazing to me that a smaller man (relatively speaking) could push a TE into a RB and knock them both down like Rod did.

I also remember a play against the Bills. Rod blitzes, sacks Kelly on like the 2 YL and forces a fumble that we recovered for a TD.

That's the first one that comes to my mind. I think it's what separates him from a show boat type like Sanders. He was a stellar player in pass coverage, but he would lay the wood on a RB or QB in a heartbeat!

Here's a great highlight vid in tribute to Rod and being inducted into the HOF....brings back some great memories!

i will never forget the sack on kelly and forced fumble. i also remember he had a 80 yard punt return for a td against the jets. i also remember another 80 yard or so punt return he took to the house against the chiefs in a sunday or monday night game

            1. The punter he hurdled on a return where he broke/bloodied the guy's nose.

            2. The KO sacks - he was spectacular on the corner blitz. There was a season where I remember us knocking out starting QBs week in and week out, don't remember the exact season, but Rod had some great sacks in one particular season.

            3. Rod talking about how he knew what play was coming the majority of the time (run vs pass) by watching how long the play caller (OC or HC) covered their face while they called in the play. He was as smart as he was athletic.

            4. This is a dig, I know, but I liked when Hines Ward got under his skin. Kudos to Ward for getting in the head of the best of the best. I have to remember this on Hines' day. But that fact that I was so impressed by Hines', it's a testament to the respect I had for Woodson.

Woodson is arguably the best of the best. I think you can make the case for him being the #1 best all around football player ever regardless of position.

              A general comment:

The thing that made Woodson special was his closing speed on the ball. When the ball was released he had a burst. He was never the best cover guy, but he covered himself with his freakish athleticism.

And he redefined the role a DB could play in tha he didt it all.

If he played for us in the 70s, he might be remembered as our best player in Steelers history.
