Can this be correct? Thirty five million over 6 years I wonder how much is guaranteed? Regardless, with Heath's age and provided he doesn't get a career ender he'll see all of that 35 million. That will work out to about 6 million per year; the franchise number for TEs was about 4.5 million. Why would the Steelers give him this kind of coin? I hope this deal doesn't prohibit players who are more prominent in the offense and defense from getting signed.

There's still another day before camp starts. Clark and Reed?
Of course, with Heath's numbers one and or both of these guys may be playing their last year as a Steeler.

I was talking to a girl whose mom knows another mom whose daughter went to grade school with Heath and they said he really hates everything about Pittsburgh. Being from Virginia he hates Yankees and thinks since Gettysburg is in Pennsylvania anything to do with Pennsylvania is bad because his great, great, great grandfather's cousin was at Gettysburg.
I expect he will get out of town as fast as he can.
Ben also is known to be a friend of heath's and he likes girls and goes to bars. He also had at least one drink while underage in college and it is reported talked to at least 3 girls in college while both drinking and not drinking. He also failed to turn in 3 homework assignments that are weighing heaviliyon him and he is unlikely to perform well this season until this is resolved. My cousin's friend's beautician knows this because her daughter was one of the girls.
"My team, may they always be right, but right or wrong...MY TEAM!"
Aside from the fact that he is one of the best TE's in the league, I'm thrilled because I just bought a #83 Miller jersey and was afraid he might leave after next year.
Woohoo.
In my case I was waiting until he got resigned to buy one. Now I can go out and grab one up! It's MILLER TIME!

I don't think there are many players more vital to our offense than Heath Miller. He's one hell of a blocker and catches the ball when it's thrown to him. He's invaluable in my opinion, the epitome of Steeler and worth every penny.

I don't disagree with you, but, I like to play the Devil's advocte. Is he more important to the "team" than Holmes? Woodley? Timmons? Clark and Reed? (together, because, obviously he's more important than either one of them)
That's the list of soon to be FAs that may not be able to be signed because of Heath's dollars.

On the other side of that coin, he deserves to be the 2nd highest player on the offense.
I think he's around the #6 or #7 most important player on the squad...

You forgot to mention that the girl you were talking to was "a hot babe that you chatted with on the internet all day" and that we should all be jealous. And you forgot to mention that Heath once killed a guy with a bowstaff.
OK contract people. Numbers are surprising but deserving. My questions is...Is it possible the Steelers front loaded the contract with consideration of an uncapped year next year? I think I recall rules about existing contracts where a team could not restructure and increase a salary in the uncapped year to exceed a percentage increase. Being that it will be a new contract, the Steelers might have front loaded this year and next to get the numbers where Miller would stay. If this is possible within the rules, perhaps the Steelers could gamble with locking up some other players long term by side stepping the salary cap in 2010 and getting back on track for 2011. I have heard this discussion for many teams with existing players who might not be retained because they played themselves into a higher market value than the existing team could afford. There are some knowledgable posters on this planet who might know the answer.
The numbers that Oviedo posted with the top TE's averaging around $4.5 million were last year's numbers.
Antonio Gates signed his latest contract in 2005, Jason Witten in 2006, and Tony Gonzalez in 2007. I'm sure when they re-sign, they will be making a lot more than that (except for possibly Gonzalez, who is already 33 years old)
So far this off-season, a few TE's have increased those numbers with lucrative 6 year deals (much like the infamous "year of the guard" were it seemed like everyone was getting 7 years $49 million deals that made Faneca's head explode).
We weren't willing to give Faneca an extension that was commensurate with the crazy money that those guards were making because he was an older player who was on the decline. Heath is a young player who has contributed to two championships and still has the potential to get even better, so he was deserving of a deal among the top TE's in the game.
On 4-6-09, the Buccanneers gave Kellen Winslow a 6 year extension worth $36.1 million with $20.1 million guaranteed. With incentives, the deal could grow to $42.1 million.
On 4-11-09, the Redskins gave Chris Cooley a 6 year extension worth $30 million with $14 million guaranteed.
Today, the Steelers gave Heath a 6 year extension worth $35.3 million with $12.5 guaranteed.
While Winslow and Cooley may have better numbers as a fantasy TE, would any of you rather have Winslow or Cooley for this team? Anyone? Heath is the best all-around TE in the game and the best fit for this team of any TE in the league. The front office realized that and took action, locking him up until he is Hines Ward's age.
I look forward to many years of chanting HEEEEEEEEATH (as well as SWEEEEEEEEED) at Heinz Field after big catches.
Steeler teams featuring stat-driven, me-first, fantasy-football-darling diva types such as Antonio Brown & Le'Veon Bell won no championships.
Super Bowl winning Steeler teams were built around a dynamic, in-your-face defense plus blue-collar, hard-hitting, no-nonsense football players on offense such as Hines Ward & Jerome Bettis.
We don't want Juju & Conner to replace what we lost in Brown & Bell.
We are counting on Juju & Conner to return us to the glory we once had with Hines & The Bus.
