In the Case of Flabio (Broderick Jones)

I was going through images of Broderick Jones on Google and I happened to notice how ripped his body was at the combine. By the end of his first season however you can clearly see he looks really flabby. What has changed diet wise with this beast? Should I be concerned? I really hope he's been pumping the weights again and not being told to get heavier at the expense of strength and athleticism.

I'll post a pic of Jones from the combine below. Now go to Google images and compare his face and body after that time period as a Steeler. The difference is night and day, in my view.

The Steelers are potentially looking to land a top tackle, and one of them is in Pittsburgh on Monday for a visit.

Come on bro. This is a major negativity reach.

Jones displayed more athleticism than WE HAVE EVER SEEN in a Steeler rookie tackle and you are worried about the weight he had doing that?

I am not calling you a troll, but this does feel like trolling for a a reaction.

In view of the fact that Mike Tomlin has matched Cowhers record I give him the designation:

    TCFCLTC-
The Coach Formerly Considered Less Than Cowher

I wasn't trolling for a reaction. It was a concern and nothing more. I'm assuming he'll be fit and powerful coming into camp. We'll definitely need him. I'm hoping Dan Moore is a backup for another season and that we'll have the 2 rookies on the OL start right away. The OL has so much potential. Nevertheless, I'm glad you didn't see what my overactive imagination saw, apparently.

How many top notch NFL linemen look ripped while playing? The goal is to maximize mass and maintain some level of fitness. These guys are like "rockem" " sockem" robots.

Jones will be our top Olinemen.

It's almost like players train specifically to optimize for the combine. And that training for the decathalon is different than optimizing to be good at football.

When Fabio was a big deal I saw a poster at a Maui restaurant of a fat dude in a model pose with long blond hair like his that literally said "Flabio". It was hilarious.

That would have been hilarious. I hope no one takes any of my nicknames for players I like or dislike too seriously. It's merely for entertainment purposes and makes me laugh. My small mind needs a creative outlet in my boring life.

Here's a video of Jones from yesterday. I think it destroys the premise of this thread.

Not really. Flabio looked much better at the combine physique wise. Look at his chiseled face at the combine compared to his fat face now. I stand by my original belief that BJ was in better shape at the combine then he is now.

maybe you should travel to camp so you can see his body up close and personally.

                          what a weird post

You are using your opinion of his face (without even showing a picture you think he looks fat in) as a proxy for how fat you think he is.

The video I posted has him without a shirt on. He's probably in the low to mid 20%s re: body fat. Maybe even high teens.

I think it's pretty clear that he's not "flabby" in that video. Especially on the OL scale.

Also, the assumption that the weight players are at the combine is a good football weight is silly.

All high end players that participate in the combine do everything they can to game the system. If you ever get a chance, pick up Tim Ferriss' 4 Hour Body. He trains with a combine preparation coach for like 48 hours and has insane improvements in the tests. But he didn't get any faster or stronger. Just learned the technique for the vertical jump.

So even if he was lighter for the combine, it's a way to game the process and get a better 40 time. When optimizing for playing football, players act differently.
