Edited: Profootball Reference said he also started 16 games in ATL. Don't think I knew that.

It all comes down to what you value in terms of results and which stats you value and put meaning into. They all have flaws.
What in the world are you talking about Flip? It is absurd to think the NFL Defensive MVP award should be given to the best player on the team that wins the Super Bowl. Extending that logic, all season awards should just go to the winning Super Bowl team. They'd get the Offensive Player of the year, MVP, and rookies of the year too. Yeah... that would make a lot of sense. C'mon man!!! It's an award for the defensive player that had the best and most impactful season.

The comparison to a wide receiver celebrating a garbage time TD is equally absurd. You're not allowed to appreciate or be recognized for a great season that didn't end in a Super Bowl win?

You're awesome Flip, but your thoughts on this seem a little whack.

a lot of flippy's thoughts go off the rails... lol.

its a regular season award but some folks keep trying to make the playoffs and SB part if the process.

Nah. As others have said Donald was a multi-season winner, TJ is not.
By your theory TJ would have won Donalds last one as TJ did not have one yet.

In view of the fact that Mike Tomlin has matched Cowhers record I give him the designation:

They DO all have flaws. But pff is SO AGGRESSIVE in trying to correct flaws in traditional stats that their results wind up FAR WORSE.

If one simply WATCHES A GAME ones conclusions as to who played well are made BEFORE YOU SEE ANY STATS. Pff metrics are the ONLY ONES that FREQUENTLY contradict the impressions created when one watches the game. Why?

Yes the media is a joke. Which is why i laugh when some on this board criticize Tomlin for treating them like they are joke

The national media who pick DPOY are the same guys who praise Tomlin relentlessly.

                  Still think they're a "joke"?

Yes.. because the media doesn’t hire or fire Tomlin.

This is why some folks are hard to take seriously when it comes to this stuff.

The media are leaches who will praise you one day and bash you the next. Whatever it takes to get clicks, fill air time or meet deadlines.

An Edge rusher led a nose tackle in sacks? Do you see what is wrong with your argument?

I wouldn?t have been shocked if TJ won that year.

but we also had a 4 game skid to end 2020.

and I do know that Offensive player of the year is week to week. Its not based on who has the most passing yards or passing TD?s.

Brock Purdy and Lamar were neck and neck in and then the Ravens spanked the 49ers and it was over. Now everyone says its Lamar again this year.

So its not just stats. Its also momentum. I don?t particularly care if Watt wins this year. I?m more concerned with winning a playoff game.

If Watt finished second its not the end of the world. Same if Garrett finished second this year. He is still a damn good player.

My thoughts usually go a little whack.

In a roundabout way I think I was going down an extreme thought trail because these awards are kinda arbitrary.

Everyone has a different idea of what impactful means in the context of the season.

To make it completely extreme, What if a guy had 100 sacks and his team didn?t win a game? What impact did he make?

The other extreme is a the best player on the SB winner.
