    Defensive MVP

It's crazy to see TJ Watt squarely behind Myles Garrett and Micah Parsons in the Defensive MVP race. I get that Garrett anchors the number one defense in the league. But in every article I read or segment I see on TV, the only statistical support for either Garrett or Parsons are these weird PFF metrics, such as pass rush win rate. The only thing Watt is usually credited for is sacks. I almost never see any article that mentions Watt leads both of those dudes in just about every traditional defensive metric possible:
    Sacks
    Sack Yards
    Tackles For Loss
    Tackles
    Forced Fumbles (tied with Garrett)
    Fumble recoveries
    Int
    Passes Defended (batted balls)
    Defensive TDs

How in the world is Watt possibly behind Garrett and Parsons? Why is nobody mentioning the statistical dominance of Watt over these two in every meaningful way?

If stats matter - TJ is the MVP in a runaway.

If it's something totally irrelevant and intangible, you might as well pick Justin Tucker. He had less sacks as well so the award is meaningless.

Advanced stats have their place but I don't understand this, since when is the defensive mvp based on that? Is that what they are basing it on or what is going on here...

I think Watt should get it simply because of how important he is to his team, if he doesn't start it usually means a loss I believe.

If he doesn't get it, I think I'll end up thinking it's because he didn't score on that INT where he got it inside the 10 or whatever.

Watt already won. I think Garrett gets it because he is also an impact player on a great defense and has never won before.

Just part of the business of football.

The fix has been in since the start of the season for Garrett to win. The media hype train started before the season

The league wants to spread awards around, but Watt absolutely is better than Garrett

The funny thing is, even if you agree with the analytics rankings, sportswriters who vote on these awards almost always just sort by stats and vote that way, and if that happens, TJ walks away with it.

Still wondering if he's really not going to win it.

If he don't win it it is a sham. 'nuff said.
Help me find my post proving I am a Yinzer!

I will tip my hat to Tomlin if he has a winning record and the team makes the play-offs in the upcoming season.

don't really care who the media picks, they're a joke

players snubbed him from their all-pro team yesterday ... could be some jealousy because he gets the TV ads, etc.?

I think this vote will be a litmus for PFF and their stats.

This could be about Myles pass rush win rate vs TJ?s real production imho.

Ramon Foster was talking about letting a pass rusher beat you so that you can run him by the QB. Ie. Pass rush wins don?t matter if you don?t finish or impact the play and they may in fact be a pass rush loss if the Olineman runs you past the QB anyway.

But it?s all meaningless anyway. DMVP should be the best D player on the team that ultimately wins the SuperBowl.

Anyone else celebrating the DMVP is like a WR celebrating a Garbage time TD while their team is down 20.

It all comes down to what you value in terms of results and which stats you value and put meaning into. They all have flaws.

If that's what sports writers did, I think TJ would already have a 2nd DPOY. I believe he led Donald in most statistical categories the year he finished 2nd to him.

I was listening to this today too.

Compared it to Dupree, who when he was here would often "beat" his guy but be well past the QB and unable to make a play. Said that's a "win" for the OL in their meeting rooms.

Depends how they score a win in at places like PFF I guess.

That ain't what happened in 2020 when Aaron Donald somehow beat TJ for the award. Watt dominated him in most categories as well and Donald had already won the award multiple times. The business of football seems to be a highly subjective popularity contest.
