good point. Mason and Mitch are not the answer either. We have enough experience with both to know what they are. that said, it is a failing of Tomlin / khan not to have a backup QB on the roster that is in development that we know has some potential. Look at all these other teams bring in young unknown QBs. Why can?t we have some guy that could come in and run the wildcat or have some upside that could surprise us? instead we have Mitch who might have more confidence in his arm than anyone I?ve ever seen who is gonna throw at every tight window he can find?and we have Mason who processes slow like Kenny. Mason has the arm but his mental processing is what holds him back imho. Either way, it doesn?t matter. Odds are we?ll see the results we will see.

IMO, they have to play Kenny for the rest of the season and see if he can improve enough to have the potential of a franchise QB. I know it's unlikely but they have to know if they need to draft another QB early next year because there are several good prospects.

I think Mason was benched because there was a steep drop off from our passing and points ranking from 2018 to 2019.

We were ranked 6th in points and 4th in yards in 2018.
We ranked 27th in points and 30th in yards in 2019 with Mason and Duck.

The dip from 2021 to 2022 was minor because of Canada. we went from 21 to 26 in points and yardage rankings were the same.

I do think Mason was unfairly benched but we also knew Ben was coming back so it didn't matter.

I always thought Mason would be given a year to see what he had as the starter after Ben retired and thought it was odd we never gave him a shot.

if Mason was really as good as you suggested why didn't any other team scoop him up this offseason? Something has to be going on when you look at all the other teams with lackluster backups. I mean, Dobbs is being called every other week to play but no one wants Mason so he came back.

Mason was available for cheap to every team in this QB starved league, and also available at the trade deadline to the myriad teams with QB injuries, and nobody came calling.

The back up QB in Pittsburgh has been viewed as a star for the past 50 years. It will never change.

The difference is for the first time in almost 20 years, there are real serious doubts about the starter
