Mason and Washington got drafted in the 2nd of 5 straight years (2017-2021) in which the Steelers double-dipped at the same university in the draft, which to me signaled a sort of complacency, maybe arrogance, and also happens to be one of the not so great draft eras in team history, one they're still trying to dig out of.
Was Colbert running out of steam and should they have moved on sooner?
2017 they doubled down on Tennessee with Dobbs, George Kittle was taken soon after.
2018 they doubled down on OSU with Mason, Sam Hubbard taken with next pick, Orlando Brown and Mark Andrews a few picks later.
(If you're scoring at home, Kittle/Andrews not enticing enough to part with Grimble/James/McDonald -- eesh)
2019 they doubled down on UM with Zach Gentry, possibly regretting the misses of the previous two years.
2020 they doubled down on Maryland with Brooks Jr., Rams starter Jordan Fuller taken with the very next pick.
2021 they doubled down on T A&M with Moore Jr., for whom they just traded up to draft his replacement two years later.
