This is a huge mistake on management's part. There is no way in hell I would sign a player to a big contract coming off a season in which that player played like dung. Furthermore, he'll probably sulk all season with Flores coaching him like he did in Miami when he cried his way off the team. Besides this with two of the worst LBs in the league playing in front of him he's proven that he can't tackle and he avoids contact all the time. Not good.
This is a good signing. Dj at anything similar would be idiotic.
DJ @ $18 would be a bargain.
He'll probably sign for more than that (next season, paid for by someone else I think).
The counter argument is that we will have a bunch of space to spend on skill guys next season after the dead money comes off the books and with our QB cap hits so low. I would rather see how this year goes to see if we hit on the rookie WRs though. But I like that DJ gets open and think that having a safety blanket isn't a bad idea for a QB that is less than great.

Fitz had more tackles than all of the ILBs on the roster last year.
He led all safeties (not just FSs) in tackles last year IIRC.
It's unfortunate because it means that guys in front of him weren't doing what they were supposed to.
But it's foolish to suggest that last year shows that he "can't tackle and avoids contact all the time". If he was trying to avoid contact last year, he did a very terrible job of it.
Last season, he was literally the worst S in the league at avoiding contact.

Was going to post the same. Great signing, glad they got it done before camp.

Leads team in tackles.
Leads all players in the NFL save for linebackers in tackles.
Had 124 total tackles- 2010 DMVP Troy P had 64.
Yes he had more opportunities because linebackers were trash true. But he cleaned up their mess ALL SEASON LONG.
You are ridiculous man.

In view of the fact that Mike Tomlin has matched Cowhers record I give him the designation:
TCFCLTC-
The Coach Formerly Considered Less Than Cowher

Honestly, if it was me, I wouldn't sign DJ this offseason. It's a gamble, but if Pickens does what they expect AND considering the QBs are expected to be sub-par, DJ's value will be lowered naturally.
And if it doesn't, and he significantly outperforms the other guys, you pay him the $18m next offseason

I will say what I said about Bell.
I don't doubt he will get paid...just hope it is not by us.
I don't disagree that is the market value.
My take FOR YEARS has been the market for receivers is stupid PERIOD.
I don't care about market trends.
We are loaded at receiver and have DJ cheap this season. We reload at will. The league is full of receivers. Just draft them and let them be a burden on another stupid team. Ditto backs.
My value is related to how replaceable a player is.
DJ was a Pro Bowler (barely) right? Let me ask.
How many excellent receivers have we drafted without trading up? Might need to get a friend you might run out of fingers.
Do that with secondary. At our original draft spot. Go back TWENTY, THIRTY, FORTY, years?
Talented but no hands Ike? Hands but no talent Gay? Chris Hope?
Nevermind Tomlin.... COWHER era too. Woodson and Lake drafted by NOLL were the last ones.
Pay your pass rushers too. Hard to find great ones.
Spend that money saved on receivers on defense. Pay something for offensive line.
But I'm never paying a barely probowl receiver as much as a young two time all pro secondary player we had to trade away a number 1 to aquire.
If DJ walks we will be fine. We will be able to buy more defense or a tackle instead.
