2nd Chance QBs

It's still just 3 guys in 40 years that failed with their first team and then won a SuperBowl on their next team.
Steve Young turned out to be the only good QB of the 3. And they all ended up on spectacular teams.
I'm convinced this is about as viable a chance of working out for us as one of us winning the PowerBall.sigpicComment

And maybe it's a crappy question, but: Do you maybe even want your bridge QB to be slightly worse? I wouldn't actively try to tank by selling all good players for draft picks, but if the difference between Mason / Haskins and a bridge QB is 6 wins vs 8 wins, I wouldn't mind it.I would tend to argue MR and/ or Haskins can offer just as much as a Winston, Bridgewater, or even a Taylor on the relative cheap as a bridge QB.
For a bridge QB you are looking at what a year or 2 until your rookie gets up to speed? I don't see the logic in burning draft picks and/ or cap space to achieve this.
Minshew, Trubinsky, and/ or Mariota is a different story, then you don't pick a QB high in the draft.
Buffalo did the try hard thing for a decades between Kelly and Allen. And all it did was keep them in that "usually miss the playoffs, rarely get to a WC game" zone.
I think it's important to be honest about when you need to rebuild your team.Comment

I remember...he was TRASH as a young player. In today's NFL he would have never been allowed time to develop.I was watching the new doc about Terry and I didn't know that he was sacked for a safety in 3 straight games lol. To be fair though I don't think that team was very good at first which probably had something to do with his struggles. But yeah he definitely turned it around.
Heck Noll was shaky on him during OUR 1st SB SEASON when Terry was demoted to backup for the first 6 games.sigpic
In view of the fact that Mike Tomlin has matched Cowhers record I give him the designation:

I agree, I am against trading the future for QB "retreads". To my point most of these "bridge QBs" offer the same or less than MR/ Haskins at a possible steep price and or future draft picks. And maybe it's a crappy question, but: Do you maybe even want your bridge QB to be slightly worse? Very rarely does a team jettison a franchise QB. We were burned badly with Woodley, Graham, and Blackledge.Help me find my post proving I am a Yinzer!
I will tip my hat to Tomlin if he has a winning record and the team makes the play-offs in the upcoming season.Comment

Most of Doug Williams career he was a Tampa Bay Buccaneers "starter".
He ABSOLUTELY was the epitome of "has all the tools don't know how to use them".
Frankly, his SB performance shocked the world because of his years of futility in Tampa Bay.sigpic

That would be the equivalent of us grabbing someone like Trubisky and making him MR's backup only to see MR be the starter but get replaced by Trubisky during the playoffs and go on a run and win it all. That'd be fine by me, but it feels like dumb luck that's not a repeatable strategy.sigpicComment

Don't forget way back then only 10 teams went to the playoffs. It's easier to get in the postseason door nowadays. And maybe it's a crappy question, but: Do you maybe even want your bridge QB to be slightly worse? The odds of it happening are not really the point. I argued the same point with Haskins. If he pans out, then great! You found your next starter. If it doesn't, the short term risk was next to nothing, and the long term risk is nothing. No big deal. Let him compete for the job and if not he is cut with no dead cap money hanging over your head. It's still just 3 guys in 40 years that failed with their first team and then won a SuperBowl on their next team.

Drafting a HOF QB is dumb luck too. Drafting a 10 yr starter is maybe one step below dumb luck. That would be the equivalent of us grabbing someone like Trubisky and making him MR's backup only to see MR be the starter but get replaced by Trubisky during the playoffs and go on a run and win it all. That'd be fine by me, but it feels like dumb luck that's not a repeatable strategy.

Charlie Batch and Tommy Maddox went to new teams and got rings... Wait, that's not exactly what you meant, is it? LOL
Funny how guys like Stafford (and even Brees and Manning) got sent to new teams that simply had enough talent to get the job done, but to your point, no one ever questioned their talent.
On topic, who was QB when Chucky won in Tampa? I know Dilfer was already gone, but my gut says that was a retread. Maybe Brad Johnson?2013 MNF Executive Champion!Comment

what amazed and saddened me was 2 years later he was out of the league.
Usually a SB performance like that gets you a huge contract.
He was the lowest paid starting QB while with Tampa and paid less than 12 backups as well.
He played for the USFL when Tampa refused to pay him $600K even though they made the playoffs 3 times with him.
No other teams showed interest after he was released by the Redskins.Steelers 27

Parts of this thread: Steve Young had the tools, he was just in Tampa.
Other parts: Doug Williams just couldn't put it together...
Not judging anyone's posts, it's just an observation on how history paints these guys. Both were stuck in Tampa, struggled then each left and each went on to win the big game when given a chance outside of Tampa2013 MNF Executive Champion!Comment

I wouldn't put Dilfer in with Plunkett; Plunkett won TWO Super Bowls and was an intrical part of the winning that the Raiders accomplished. Dilfer stunk before he got to Baltimore and after he left Baltimore. He was merely a caregiver on a team with a top 3 D of all time, which was clearly why they won the SB. Only the Steelers of the '70s and the 1985 Bears ever had a D on par with the 2000 Ravens. If you are gonna put Dilfer on this list you'd have to include Brad Johnson, who went along for a ride with the Tampa Bay 's D in 2002. Plunkett did more than just "go along for a ride" with the Raiders' D.Comment
