The hardest part for Chiefs is the AFC is littered with great young QB talent. Mahomes, Herbert, Allen & Burrow....They should each keep knocking each other out every year of playoffs keeping any one from being a Dynasty.

oh the horror of winning those stanley cups with only thousands left to spare in cap space
    They won't suck.

At least not in the eyes of people who don't think we sucked over the last decade.

But they won't come close to what people think we should have done with Ben's last decade.

Fans here would not rate GB as successful over Rodgers career though, right?

    Or NO.

At least if the standards were consistent

Buff is too early to tell (and still haven't had a market level QB cap hit). Allen has a high AAV, but his cap hit this year was $10.2M. That's less than half what Ben's hit was this year. And also less than what his hit will be next year while he's doing God's other work (not playing for the Steelers). That's not Ben's fault, just a choice we made.

i wonder where the chiefs would be this season without mahomes.

I wish our top rated defense would "choke" as badly as mahomes

Josh Allen's cap hit this past season was a little over $10 million and will only be $16+ mil next season.

That's funny (and stings) but in reality, he spent an entire half of football choking it away. Who would have imagined the Chiefs not scoring a single point in the entire 2nd half?!!

Paramount to any team's consistent success is having a franchise caliber QB. That being said there can be anomalies of players that teams believed were franchise caliber QBs. For example, the Ravens thought Flacco was a frachise caliber QB. Why did they pay him? Probably because they thought he would eventually develop into a better QB.

It's interesting and as an FYI Flacco made over 171 million for his career. Shocking right?
Usually I agree that there are many ways to win in the NFL, but mathematically I don't think that lots of big ticket players without good value contracts can work. On other things I agree with you.

As far as Flacco, one magical run of luck turned into a huge bonanza for him. He closed his eyes and heaved it up for a fantastic playoff run and let some big receivers go up and get it while defenders fell down all over the place. Crazy!

Yep. They're in a better situation than Buffalo IMO because the longer contract lets them kick the money further and they are protected against QB wage inflation for a long time (assuming it increases faster than his contract does).

I really like how they did his contract. I think they got lucky that they had what looks like a generational player who came due during a pandemic year and was willing to sign long term at what I think will end up seeming like a good deal by the end.

Teams have to make tough financial decisions regarding top tier talent and let the chips fall where they remain regarding injury risk, free agency, salary cap, and the draft.
I want Mahommes. Just like I want TJ.

We had Ben on a market level contract for a long time and were pretty consistently competitive. Just not to the level we all wanted.

And now that we have a shot at playing on easy mode, I want to take the shot. Especially since "cheap good QB" + "good defense" seems to be a great recipe for a championship. And I think we'll have a good D with TJ and Fitz. And hopefully the tail end of Cam's career if we get the QB right next year (or this year if we fall in love with someone).

You certainly give Mahommes a 2nd contract. I bet Burrow will live up to a market level contract too. Maybe neither of these guys get to Ben's level, but I think they will be good. Allen's probably in this boat too.

But I thought the same thing about Russell Wilson. And while he's been good, he hasn't been great.

Even A Rodgers, who I think is probably the "best" QB in the league, hasn't really had the success you'd think a guy as good as he is would have. Brees too.

I don't know about LJ despite all the success he's had on his 1st contract. I think that elite athleticism will fade during his 2nd contract. Maybe he's still great after that? I would be reluctant to take the chance, but you kind of have to.

Baker looks like he won't be worth a market level contract. I think they won't give it to him this year at least.
