Our leadership might feel compelled to take a couple of CBs in the draft, which will leave us with less picks to address other needy positions.

Feels like we burned that bridge. But we did bring VW back after a parting that seemed kind of d!ckish (with us releasing him late even though it seemed like an obvious move that was required for cap space).

we may sign a FA CB in May after they no longer figure into the comp formula.

I think we might do this too. But I think it will require a cut or another dummy extension (Haden?) because my understanding is that all of our current cap space is spoken for.
Exceptions are granted to players that have done something. That ain't Layne.
If they cut him, they could probably recoup any signing bonus he may have gotten in his rookie deal (probably not much if anything). There is probably language for forfeiting stuff if you're an idiot and you get arrested.
