I can tell you from when I used to work/volunteer in prisons years ago that the average recividism rate was sky high.I'm spinning?..lol. you keep backtracking. Make bold statements that there are little to no rehabilitation programs in prisons, act like to majority of prisons are private etc and then when I show that you lied, you say 'i didn't say every prison I said some'....lol.
Waiting for you to show me what percentage of that 8% don't care about rehabilitation.
Kinda wonder why money should even be spent on programs where it would be better served in the community fort the people that aren't criminals
Still waiting for you to tell me how zero private michigan prisons are profiting off truth in sentencing laws.....
Somewhere between 70-80% of prisoners end up back in prison within 3-5 yrs after getting out.
There are lots of well intended people in the prisons, but rehab doesn’t really happen all that often. And I tend to think it’s not entirely the prison’s fault. I think it’s a systematic issue that needs to be addressed.
Private prisons are just 1 small part of the problem. Not all of it for sure, but it is a little crazy that anyone at all would have a profit motive to keep people incarcerated.sigpicComment

Great, you are hearing with an open mind. My response. You suggest I dont know the white side of it? You know the one race that is rare in Hawaii? Black people. Just a handful in my school. You know the ONLY race that is plentiful in Idaho. White people. I have raised a stepson who is ethically White and Asian. I know from up close the difference between how he was treated and how I was treated at his age. I never had "the talk" about how not to get abused or killed by cops with my son. He has NEVER ONCE been treated as a criminal by a cop. Yes, I have lived the black side true. I have "observed" what it means to be white up close my entire life including from right within my own household dude.
What serious person is promoting looting, killing cops etc? Some people take their anger overboard, others just want an excuse to steal. Floyds brother's comments were right on about people shouldnt be wildin over this. They deserve to be punished if they loot and steal. Killing innocent cops? I missed where people are doing this with impunity.I don't have the answers and obviously nobody else does either but I can assure you that rioting, looting and killing innocent cops doesn't help anything.
Just like you didn't want to be presumed guilty based on the color of your skin, certain people want to do the same to the police.
I'm skeptical that removing police, removing most criminals from prison etc etc etc will be the answer but I'm curious to see if it would. Just not in my town.
I think expecting the cops to do all the changing but not hold citizens accountable will never work.
Citizens not being held accountable? Really?
Heck bad ones AND peaceful ones are getting arrested.

According some friends who are from various Asian countries, they mention the tend to go unnoticed a lot of times and fly under the radar.Great, you are hearing with an open mind. My response. You suggest I dont know the white side of it? You know the one race that is rare in Hawaii? Black people. Just a handful in my school. You know the ONLY race that is plentiful in Idaho. White people. But it seems like it ebbs and flows in the US and some Asian nationalities seem under pressure. During the gold rush years we paid next to nothing to the Chinese immigrants to build the railroads in the west. Then come WWII, we put Japanese in concentration camps. Now a lot of animosity toward China is being stirred up by the current administration. So the flying under the radar seems to be coming to an end, but weÂ’ll see.
While the BLM issue has become more prevalent these last few years, I remember back after 9/11 some friends thinking that black folks were free and clear because America had a new target for the hateful folks in the Muslims. That got a little crazy too. Instead of just being mad at terrorists, people got mad at completely harmless folks like the Sikhs.
It feels like a subset of every society needs an enemy unfortunately. A lot of times itÂ’s immigrants. Sometimes itÂ’s races. Sometimes itÂ’s religions. No idea why. And itÂ’s not just a US thing. Take any country and they have their enemies. ChinaÂ’s got 1m Muslims in concentration camps right now. The world is a strange place.
It all traces back to the Bible. God needed the Devil as his rival. And we all need a boogeyman to maintain sanity in an uncertain world.
I hope it ends soon and everyone can peaceful coexist and support one another. But I suspect if we fix one wrong, another will fill the gap to replace it. ItÂ’s been a cycle since the world started. IÂ’m not sure how you change that competitive mindset and get people to realize just because someone else does well it doesnÂ’t take anything away from you. I think people get angry at others primarily from fear. I think it we can remove fear from people, that might do the trick and help us all get along.sigpicComment

Flippy, after 9/11 we were all united for a few days or even the first year. We had a new enemy.
Then it wore off and we went back to our daily routines and then...
Obama was elected and somehow divided the country like never before. He wore a tan suit, had his feet on the table and his wife actually wanted kids to eat healthy and it was all viewed as evil... oh, and he had a Muslim fist bump too.
I saw a tweet that said
“America seems cursed.. like it was built on an ancient Indian burial land. Oh wait..”

Lol. It is like we're cursed.Flippy, after 9/11 we were all united for a few days or even the first year. We had a new enemy.

I think I remember the good will lasting longer than a year. I think we were united until we didn't find and WMD in Iraq.
Obama was ok at first imho and I think his mistake was claiming the war on terrorism was over in his 2nd term. At the point, who were we supposed to be mad at? Trying to bring people and humanity together was his mistake in a sense.
That was around the time we started seeing big divisions in wealth/income between the haves and the have nots. That stirred people up imho and we needed an enemy. So did the racial issues fill the gap at that point? Seems Americans also started getting angry about immigrants at that time too. And in there, the current administration found a crack and exploited it.
I honestly thought racial differences were behind us at some point in the last couple decades. I think all this stuff resurfaced recently. Maybe it hasn't really disappeared, but it appeared to do so at least in my bubble.
And I accept we're all living in our bubbles and don't see what everyone else sees. Everyone I know now, black, white, red, yellow, green, whatever, they all have professional/middle class jobs and their lives are generally ok. Maybe some are over extended and struggling to keep up with bill, or their kids have some challenges, or they run into a health issue, but just normal life stuff and I really don't see struggles between races.
Even now in the reaction to Floyd, I understand Floyd was a black man but generally everyone of every race seems appalled by what the cop did. I think it's good that we all become more sensitive to everything and it brings us together, but if race were as big an issue as it used to be, I don't think you would have seen so many white protestors in a previous generation. So to some degree, we've made some big progress.
I've realized some things I've never noticed before. As an example, I had no idea Aunt Jemima had a negative racial history. I just thought some famous old black lady invented pancakes or something. I figured it was a black business and something to be proud of. Now I'm wondering about everything. Is Mrs Butterworth's next to get in trouble? And even Uncle Ben. Just thought he was a nice old guy that made rice. Now I learn that calling a black person Aunt or Uncle has racial undertones. This is some tricky stuff. We've just eaten these foods all our lives and who would have thought there was malicious underpinnings to these brands? I can now see why some of this stuff would anger someone that's black, but I've honestly never even thought twice about it before. Some could argue that ignorance makes us bad on some level, but I think ignorance just makes us ignorant. And I think it we could give one another passes on ignorance, we'd be better off. Most of us are ignorant about something most of the time. And I don't think the majority ever meant ill will in their ignorance.sigpicComment

You said michigan's truth in sentencing supports prisons for profit.
I told you there aren't any private prisons.
So again, how is Michigan profiting off prisons? How is it possible to have the best owner, best front office, best gm, best HC, good/great drafts every year and good FA acquisitions every year, but only have 3 playoff wins in 14 years?Comment

OK, I may get flamed for this, and maybe deservedly. But with the Aunt Jemima thing, is that a case of taking this whole thing too far? I never took it as racist. Is it obvious she is depicted as a slave? What if she is just a black aunt who makes great pancakes? Or what if she is a "cook" who does so to make a living? Why are we to assume she is a slave? If she is merely a paid cook, what is wrong with that? There are plenty of white cooks and no one thinks depicting them is a slam on white people. Someone educate me if I am missing something.I've realized some things I've never noticed before. As an example, I had no idea Aunt Jemima had a negative racial history. The history of the Aunt Jemima character is racist, its rooted in slavery. But what do you mean is it going to far, nobody asked the company to due away with Aunt Jemima, they did it on their own. Its not just about being sensetive its also about branding, why in these times would you want your product associated woth racism in anyway, its just bad for biz.OK, I may get flamed for this, and maybe deservedly. And for the latest, COVID 19 has just been labeled racist because it infects blacks at twice the frequency of non-blacks.
I think Terry Crews has one of the more balanced views on this issue. Sadly he has been labeled an 'uncle ' by his own race because his views don't align with the mainstream BLM movement.Comment

I meant "going too far" as in entering into the arena of hysteria instead of being appropriate and rational. Why are we to assume a black woman character is a slave? Why can't she simply be a cook? And it's obviously putting the character in a positive light; I just don't get it. How far will they take this? I've heard some feel the Washington Monument should be torn down and Jackson be taken off all money. Why not?The history of the Aunt Jemima character is racist, its rooted in slavery. I understand where black people stand when it comes to racial inequality. This country has done some terrible things to "non whites" throughout it's history. The same can be said for anyone world wide throughout history who hasn't shared the masses views. Only people that want to change their views on race can make the necessary changes to make life better for everyone. People get so caught up into hate that they fail to use their brains. And for the latest, COVID 19 has just been labeled racist because it infects blacks at twice the frequency of non-blacks.

Our country has some serious divides on politics, race, & income inequality. As long as people don't listen to each other and continue to have extreme views regardless of race and political views nothing is ever going to change. Extremism might be a greater threat to our way of life than any other factor.
Let's hope this movement can develop into the all lives matter movement.Last edited by BURGH86STEEL; 06-19-2020, 05:02 PM.Comment
