I don't think that's what happened. I think the non-threat of a strong passing game has completely changed how defenses are playing the Steelers. Receivers are easily covered in base defense so they can focus on the run.
So the problem is not the running game, it's the passing.

Bell averaged 4.0 per carry two years ago. The line was overated in the run game.
Weak pass O has just exposed them.

In view of the fact that Mike Tomlin has matched Cowhers record I give him the designation:

        I "mostly" agree.
The run game truly isnt great, its just that this has been the case for awhile.

I think it’s age, passing game and talent. The trifecta.

Pouncey can’t even snap the ball this year. Foster has been awful too.

I think its mostly based on completion percentage and turnovers.

They started another rating for QB’s that may be more accurate.

I’m not really into ratings as the barometer for play. I prefer film.

Lamar Jackson may not have the QBR but I bet money he keeps DC’s up at night.

This is why the comparison with Ben’s first year is flawed. Ben didn’t look like this his first year. No one is out here creating nicknames for Mason just yet.

But the Patriots and Seahawks didn't know this when we had Ben. And we still couldn't run a lick. I have to disagree with you on that.

They know this NOW; but from games 1 & 2, they didn't know that.

Mason could make it interesting if he shows more improvement and plays well on a consistent basis.

It means that Mason is doing .9% better that Ben.

The offense isn't moving the ball consistently and they aren't scoring points but his rating is similar to Ben's. I'm not ready to put much credence in the passer rating until the eye test proves otherwise. I want MR to be successful, so much so, that Ben can retire and take his place in the HOF but not yet, imo.

If we were getting production from our running game the way Ben's team was, (and stop fumbling away the ball), I think this offense would produce the way that offense did with Ben running the offense.
