I think what happened is that Maniac proclaimed last year that Tomlin would get fired after last season or this season (even though he was under contract until 2020 at the time).
Then when he got extended, Maniac ignored or was ignorant of the fact that the extension went to 2021 (two years after he/she predicted Tomlin would be fired). I think it's easier to ignore the facts and keep saying that this is a "prove it" year for Tomlin and he'll get fired if we don't do X.
If he doesn't get fired at the end of this year (which should probably be the expected result), then I'm bet we'll get a "Rooney rule" type excuse for why Maniac was wrong. It definitely won't be because the original proclamation was pretty unlikely from the outset.
