the scouting/ decisions on the defensive side of the ball have been horrific.
9 of the last 12 1st/2nd rounders have been spent on defense and this is what we trot out there -

Normally I'd agree with you. But Tomlin and Colbert have made it a big big deal over the last few years that they make these picks together. That's what they keep saying.Comment

anyone responsible for the defense I would let go, including scouting. they're just not getting it right
colbert at least has some gems on the offensive side of the ball. its not his fault their drafting guys and trying to slot them in this stupid out dated scheme.

man corners into zone corners
college DEs into OLBs

The fans are constantly trying to run Tomlin out of head coach by stating the Steelers have dominant talent and therefore should blow everyone out and win the SuperBowl every year. The Steelers don't have dominant talent, especially on defense. I think it is a good reflection on Tomlin that the team has won the division four straight years and missed the playoffs by a Boswell blown field goal this year.
It is easy to question draft picks in hind sight, but they haven't drafted great on defense. They need to hit on a least one playmaker in this draft on defense. I am somewhat optimistic that Edmunds will be a good addition.
But when fans imply that putting together an NFL team that consistently wins the SuperBowl is easy; when there is so much competition from the 31 other NFL franchises, I scoff and laugh. I think that is the dopiest side of the fan culture. The belief that winning is as simple as filling their cup with water or alcohol or ordering takeout at the drive through in a fast food restaurant.Comment

They didn't get Tuitt right? Didn't get Shazier right?
Didn't get Hargrave right? Didn't get Watt right?
It's not like they've been shut out. (Although they might consider purging their secondary scouting department since they've been struggling to find starters for a while now.)Comment

You are spot on, Steelerphile. The Steelers have had dominant defenses. One of them included Jack Ham, Jack Lambert, Joe Green, Mel Blount, L. C. Greenwood and Donnie Shell. The current defense has some good players but nothing approaching the Steel Curtain. In fact, the current defense is no match even for the 2008 defense. It’s not easy to win a Super Bowl. Everything has to go right, including luck. Remember that the four won by the Steelers during the ‘70s were all in doubt in the 4th quarter. And with luck, the Steelers of the ‘70s could have won six.Last edited by RobinCole; 01-06-2019, 10:11 AM.Comment

I still believe the Steelers defense is one player away from being one of the top 5 in the league. Some draft gurus are suggesting the Steelers will go after OLB in the first round to bookend with Watt. A secondary pick with their record would be high risk.Comment
