It is a common misconception that the Steelers will be well under the cap due to Shazier coming off the books. There is more to it than that, including nice raises to Heyward and AB due to the constant restructuring that the Steelers do.

The team currently has 38 players under contract in 2019. The top 51 count against the cap so they still have to sign 13 more just to get to the point where there is a realistic cap number.

The projected cap is $190M and the Steelers are currently on the hook for just over $180M ($9.3M available).

The good news is that there is $19M still on this season's number and that will be rolled over into next season. That gives the team a little under $30M to sign the 13 players, an average of about $2.3M. Not too much, but if you have 7 rookies signed at around $8M or so, there is enough to find a FA or two.

No way would I transition him, if no one signs him we're on a $25 million dollar hook.

I'd franchise him again in a heart beat, for principle sake alone. I'd tie this up in the courts until he's 35 year old.

The Steeler won't they'll take the high road. They'll let him walk after the season, the distraction isn't worht a 3rd round comp pick.
Help me find my post proving I am a Yinzer!

I will tip my hat to Tomlin if he has a winning record and the team makes the play-offs in the upcoming season.

We should tag Bell again in FA, even though it is for 25M. Actually money we will invest is 11M ( 14 M is rolled over from Bell's 2018 FA tag.) Then trade him for a 2nd or a better offer. His new team can renegotiate that 25M into a long term contract. If we have no trade partner's we rescind the contract, and gain that cap space.

I think a player on the tag has to play on the tag contract and is not allowed to renegotiate.

It would be around $14.5 million for the transition tag

Oh, I read on this site if he's transition he is guaranteed $25 million (average of top 5 players). I think at this stage you have to weigh the distraction this may cause. If we transition him and the price is $14.5 million I may consider that. What then would be the main difference between transition and franchise tag?

transition tag would be average of top 10 RBs or 120% of what he made in 2017.

franchise tag would be top average of top 5 RBs and average of the top 5 salaries (all QBs). I looked through the CBA and i dont think thats how its worded, but thats what is widely being reported even though he didnt sign this year it still counts as being franchised for a 3rd consecutive year (apparently)

Transition tag is only the ability to match the offer if bell negotiates and signs with a team. Exclusive franchise tag means hes not allowed to negotiate with teams, non exclusive means he is allowed to negotiate but the steelers get 2 automatic first round picks if he signs with another team

At who's discretion? Whichever is higher?

It is actually bells choice but 120% of a franchise tag in 2017 would be higher than the top 10 avg RB salaries

Steeler teams featuring stat-driven, me-first, fantasy-football-darling diva types such as Antonio Brown & Le'Veon Bell won no championships.

Super Bowl winning Steeler teams were built around a dynamic, in-your-face defense plus blue-collar, hard-hitting, no-nonsense football players on offense such as Hines Ward & Jerome Bettis.

We don't want Juju & Conner to replace what we lost in Brown & Bell.
