          Week 8 Injury Report (Browns)

          Teresa Varley

          Steelers.com

The Steelers head into Sunday’s game against the Cleveland Browns relatively healthy, a benefit of coming off the bye week.

The only player on the status report this week is Marcus Gilbert, who has been ruled out for the game. Gilbert missed practice all week with a knee injury, which means Matt Feiler will step in at right tackle. Feiler started earlier this season against Tampa Bay, a 30-27 win, when Gilbert was injured.

“It helps you get more time, learn technique things and correct technique errors,” said Feiler. “This is something I have to stay ready for. It keeps me on my toes.”

Three players who missed time ahead of the bye, L.J. Fort, Morgan Burnett and Darrius Heyward-Bey, all returned to work this week.

Fort was sidelined against the Bengals with an ankle injury, the first game he has missed at any level due to an injury.

“It felt incredible to be out there at practice this week,” said Fort. “That was the first game I ever missed in my life. It was a bit of a challenge to get through. It makes it feel that much better to be out there running around.

“It was hard missing the game. I was trying my hardest to get back, but there was no way. It’s not fun at all to watch. You know you can contribute, you want to help your team and contribute. Thankfully we got the ‘W’ because that was a huge game. I was helping the guys filling in at my positon and on special teams. I was there to help out with any question.

“I am good now. I am now ready to roll.”

Fort was a full participant in practice all week, as was Morgan Burnett, who is ready to get back on the field.

“To get through practice, that felt good,” said Burnett, who said he didn’t feel any ill effects of working consecutive days. “That helped me out confidence wise. Confidence and getting back in the flow and rhythm of things, and getting back in live action. That is the biggest. I am just ready to roll.

“It was good to get in a good week of participation. Getting into a normal routine. A normal work week. The body feels good. It felt good to be out there.”

Darrius Heyward-Bey was inactive the three games leading into the bye, and is more than anxious to return to action this week. He was limited in practice on Wednesday, but a full participant on Thursday and Friday.

“Not playing is the worst,” said Heyward-Bey. “I hate not being a part of it. Two years ago I was out for six weeks, this is going to be three. A lot better than last time, but I hate it.”

Browns list Damarious Randall questionable, but should play

Posted by Darin Gantt on October 26, 2018, 12:24 PM EDT

Damarious Randall has been on the injury report most of the year, but he’s stayed on the field.

That appears to be the case again this week, as the Browns safety is again listed as questionable but is expected to play, according to Pat McManamon of ESPN.com.

Randall was held out of Wednesday and Thursday practices, but returned to work today despite groin and ankle problems.

Center J.C. Tretter is also listed as questionable, but should play.

The Browns are listing cornerback E.J. Gaines (concussion), wide receiver Rashard Higgins (knee) and linebacker Joe Schobert (hamstring) as out for Sunday’s game against the Steelers.

Myles Garrett, Jabrill Peppers “absolutely” views Steelers game as unfinished business

The Browns and Steelers get together on Sunday, seven weeks (and 70 minutes) after playing to a draw in Week One. A pair of defensive players who arrived in Cleveland via round one of the 2017 draft provided the same answer when asked on Friday whether the rematch entails a sense of unfinished business: “Absolutely.”

That was the immediate response both from defensive end Myles Garrett and safety Jabrill Peppers.

“You do not know who is the better out of the two yet,” Garrett said. “We have to finish it off and see who wins round two.”

“I definitely feel like we let them sneak out of here,” Peppers added. “We fought all of the way back, but it should not have even been that if we did what we were supposed to do from the get go. We are just going to go over there focused, ready to go, hungry. They are coming off of a bye week so they will probably have a couple of wrinkles and things we probably have not seen on tape yet. For the most part, we know what we are going to get. We know what their guys are. We know what we have to do to win. It is just about going to battle.”

During the last battle, the Browns created six turnovers. Can they do it again?

“That is the goal,” Garrett said. “Six turnovers is a lot, but I think that it is doable. Just have to keep on getting after [quarterback Ben Roethlisberger].”

Both players also see the game as pivotal to the season of a 2-4-1 team that has been in position to win six of its seven games.

“For our season and our momentum, we have to come back and punch them in the mouth,” Garrett said. “It is definitely a big game for us as it is for them — all division games are. We have to be on our p’s and q’s.”

Said Peppers: “You could not write this story any better. Coming off of a tough loss — three tough losses. Two of those, I think, we should have had, but that is the way the ball rolls some times. They are top of the division. We tied them at our place the first game of the season. Now, we get a chance to go up to their place. It is set up perfectly. Get this bad taste out of our mouths and start this run.”

They’re both right. There’s a huge difference between 3-4-1 and 2-5-1. And if the Browns are going to be true contenders in 2018, they need to find a way to come home from the confluence of three rivers with that third win.

Hue Jackson, Todd Haley dysfunction could be coming to a head

Earlier this year, the Browns bought a dog with a reputation for biting. And they may now get rid of the dog, because it’s biting.

That’s essentially what’s happening when it comes to the tenure of offensive coordinator Todd Haley. Ian Rapoport of NFL Media reports that Haley could soon be on the outs, due to lingering dysfunction between him and coach Hue Jackson.

And no one should be surprised by this development.

Haley had a well-earned reputation for being a guy who isn’t afraid to speak his mind, and for being a guy who from time to time gets into interpersonal altercations with those in his immediate vicinity. An awkward exchange from the first episode of Hard Knocks regarding the question of resting players in training camp made it clear that Jackson and Haley aren’t on the same page.

It’s also possible that the situation will be resolved not with Haley being fired but with Jackson finally getting his long-overdue pink slip. From the outset of the season, some believed that G.M. John Dorsey inevitably would fire Jackson, elevate Haley to interim coach, and then hire someone new to run the team after 2018.

Last year, Jackson managed to win an internal struggle with former V.P. of football operations Sashi Brown, pinning all of the blame on him and emerging from an 0-16 season (1-31 over two) somehow still employed. Jackson may be going back to that well again, trying to persuade ownership that Haley, not Hue, is the problem.

To the extent that Haley was hand picked by Dorsey (and Haley surely was) to join the team and run the offense, the Jackson-or-Haley question could go a long way toward resolving whether Dorsey will get to hire a new coach after the season, or whether Jackson will manage to once again persuade Jimmy and Dee Haslam to keep him around for what would be a fourth season.

With the bye week looming after games against the Steelers, Chiefs, and Falcons, don’t be surprised if the situation explodes at some point in the next 15 days.

Hue Jackson on Todd Haley report: Have to watch tape and get better

Posted by Josh Alper on October 28, 2018, 4:41 PM EDT

Before the Browns took on the Steelers on Sunday afternoon, there was a report that tensions between head coach Hue Jackson and offensive coordinator Todd Haley could lead to Haley’s departure from Cleveland.

That came a week after Jackson talked about taking a bigger role in the Browns offense after the team fell to 2-4-1 in an overtime loss to the Buccaneers and the Browns lost again this Sunday. The 33-18 loss to the Steelers saw them pick up 237 yards on 59 offensive plays, which probably won’t do anything to ease tension about the offensive side of the ball.

Jackson was asked about the Haley report after the game and didn’t comment on it directly while saying that he didn’t want to revisit last week’s comments.

“I don’t want to talk about anything from last week,” Jackson said in his press conference. “I said what I said out of frustration. That’s over and done with. Let’s go watch the tape and see how we get better.”

With the Chiefs and Falcons on tap before a Week 11 bye, there may be discussion about other firings in Cleveland by the time Thanksgiving rolls around.

We are counting on Juju & Conner to return us to the glory we once had with Hines & The Bus.

Wow. Wonder if Todd gets to be interim coach now.
Steeler teams featuring stat-driven, me-first, fantasy-football-darling diva types such as Antonio Brown & Le'Veon Bell won no championships.
